These all appear to be (at a glance) the big hospitals; what about Cottage Hospitals, are they suitable for inclusion? --Blowdart 13:04, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment. I was wondering about including [Day Hospitals] but some are actually part of a larger hospital. Samantha of Cardyke 15:32, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not a day hospital, but the Royal Berkshire is, to my knowledge, the Royal Berkshire and Battle Hosptials, where Battle counts as a hospital on its own. Then there's Henley's Townlands Hosptial, a convelesant/cottage hospital

Perhaps someone could look at the Welsh [Other] hospitals and make sure they are allocated their town name (unless it's in the title). I am an expert on Scotland not Wales. Thanks. Samantha of Cardyke 15:32, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scotland[edit]

It would be better to list all Scottish hospitals by health board area. Hospital services are not provided per council area. Astrotrain 18:25, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Active hospitals?[edit]

Is there an active/current criteria for these hospitals? I assume there is but thought I'd check - it would likely want to be made explicit. I assume that this list doesn't want to include hospitals that no longer exist. MLA 10:40, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a currently operating qualifier to the introduction for the above purpose MLA 10:07, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly Greenwich Hospital is an article about the buildings that form the naval museum (in Greenwich park), and not any current hospital (does Greenwich still have a DGH on another site ?). Likewise London Lock Hospital long since closed - yet well known as site world's 1st STD clinic.
If the list is only for contemporary hospitals, do we really want to confuse everyone by creating a separate list for those that have closed, or would it not be easier to keep a single list replacing the details of number of beds with the term (closed) where relevant ? David Ruben Talk 10:19, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are many, many hospitals that no longer operate - when creating the Homerton University Hospital, I found that there had been a previous hospital that operated partly on that site and it was one of a reasonable number of 19th century Metropolitan Asylum Board hospitals that no longer exist. Also, there were four 20th century hospitals in the Homerton surroundings and none of those currently exist with Hackney Hospital having been closed in the mid-90s. I'm thinking that given this list is very long and not very detailed, adding redlinks for each closed hospital is going to exacerbate things. This is the external reference that mentions some of the closed hospitals [1]. MLA 10:38, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The list's future[edit]

I'd like to explore whether there is scope to make this a more effective list. I'd like to see a table rather than a very lengthy list that could perhaps include some basic information rather than just a list of links. Perhaps a table could have headers along the lines of Name, Trust, Status, Beds, Specialism. Possibly this could be a set of tables by region so London, Scotland, Wales etc. The content box itself is extremely large at the moment and I think it would make the page more readable if the content was structured slightly differently. I'm thinking a table the like of which exists at List of multiplayer browser games. MLA 10:11, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be quite a lot of overlap between this list and the Category:NHS hospitals - what are the relative advantages of list v category? — Rod talk 17:50, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As it stands, I don't think there is much value in this list over the category but see Category:Lists_of_hospitals to see what's happening on wikipedia in regard to articles like this. A more fully populated list such as the one I propose would have additional value in my opinion. MLA 08:31, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think placing this list in a table format is a good idea. Including details about whether the hospital is part of the NHS or a private/indepedent one would be useful. Also, as the current list is very close to breaching the recommended size limit, now would be a good time to consider whether it is worth splitting it. Road Wizard 08:41, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Split The List[edit]

I propose splitting this list into 4 separate lists. --sonicKAI 13:42, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Can you specify the way in which you wish to split? (e.g. split geographically, by hospital type or by NHS/non-NHS).Road Wizard 21:18, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  1. List of hospitals in England
  2. List of hospitals in Wales
  3. List of hospitals in Scotland
  4. List of hospitals in Northern Ireland
  • I don't see any problems with this proposal. Does anyone else have any comments or suggestions? Road Wizard 11:34, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with this suggestion, the list is unwieldy and very unattractive at present so forking seems like a good idea. I haven't had time to put it into tables but it might be easier once the list is split. The main contributor to the list appears to have a lot of info on the existence of Scottish hospitals and the other areas are likely to grow once someone puts the same concerted effort in. MLA 12:23, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree - it would make it easier to follow amendments - and am I the 'main contributor' to whom you are referring? Samantha of Cardyke 08:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree - The category 'Category:Hospitals in the United Kingdom' already has 4 such sub-categories. I can help with table design, but what columns are you thinking of having? I would though keep List of hospitals in the United Kingdom as this may be what some users might search for, this page then would be a simple disambig to the 4 split articles. David Ruben Talk 15:14, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The list will now be split. --sonicKAI 11:52, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
