Wikipedia Education Program (Fall 2013)[edit]

I teach a course on mass communication and journalism at the University of Southern Indiana. Currently, I'm constructing a list of journalists who should have articles about them or alternatively about the events that brought an end to their lives. If anybody wants to suggest some notable journalists who do not yet have an article, I would be willing to include some in my assignments this semester. Articles should be completed in December. In the past, we have started articles for this list! Crtew (talk) 21:36, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, welcome back, Crtew! I'll add those who I think have the right amount of coverage to make it into an article:
  • María Esther Aguilar Cansimbe
  • José Luis Cerda Meléndez, "La Gata" (Most reliable sources are in Spanish, so it might be difficult for non-Spanish speakers)
  • René Orta Salgado
  • Alberto López Bello (recently killed but he got significant coverage. Wrote extensively about drug trafficking, so his death is most likely work-related).
  • José Manuel Nava Sánchez (any Mexico City reporter is likely to be notable)
  • Amado Ramírez Dillanes (Televisa reporter)
  • Norma Alicia Moreno Figueroa and Ernesto Flores Torrijos (though Moreno's article already exists, it's not in good condition. Flores was killed with her, so perhaps creating a new article and merging Moreno's two the incident would be useful. Their deaths got some coverage by the NYT for the involvement of Juan García Ábrego).
  • Rocío González Trápaga and Ana María Marcela Yarce Viveros (Mexico City journalists killed in the same attack)
  • Hugo Alfredo Olivera Cartas
  • Alejandro Zenón Fonseca Estrada
  • Amado Ramírez Dillanes (his case is disputed by press freedom organizations)
Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. ComputerJA () 22:16, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the list! Crtew (talk) 23:50, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More journalists[edit]

Below are other journalists killed/disappeared that I've found in offline sources. I'm also adding important sources that I will get early next year.

Section naming[edit]

Hello everyone. I was thinking of a new way to organize this page. Instead of having it "Before the drug war" and "During the drug war", I believe it is more accurate and organized if we perhaps arrange them by presidencies/political administration or by year, which ever you all think is better. If you ask me, I rather do presidencies because it's easier to organize. A lot of the killings of journalists in Mexico have nothing to do with the drug war; the drug war serves as a larger narrative of the sociopolitical climate of present-day Mexico, but the media tends to categorize these killings are part of that when they sometimes aren't. Some of them have nothing to do with organized crime and are driven by personal, professional, or political motives (especially the ones prior to 2006). CPJ and Article 19 usually make emphasize on the killings per political administration/year. ComputerJA () 18:50, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the pre/post drug war division is awkward. In addition to the reasons you mention, actually putting a date to when the drug war started is problematic and inherently POV because no "war" was actually declared at any point in time. I think an organization by date is more neutral and accurate. This list is also getting quite large and I think it is time to consider breaking it up into two articles, maybe something like article title + "(before 2001)" and "(2001 to present)". I'm just throwing 2001 out as an example, I haven't put any thought into which year makes an appropriate cutoff. Vrac (talk) 14:26, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am suggesting the same in the Spanish version of the article: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Periodistas_asesinados_en_México --Eurogaming (talk) 19:26, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fall (2015) assignments[edit]

I'm making new assignments this semester. Currently, one student has selected to write about Armando Saldaña Morales. Crtew (talk) 16:23, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Recent journalists kidnapped[edit]

A journalist was kidnapped a few hours ago. His name is Salvador Adame Pardo. If he doesn't appear in two weeks, I'll add him as "Disappeared". [1] I'll post future journalists kidnapped on this section. ComputerJA () 01:51, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Netflix show producer: media worker?[edit]

Hi, everyone. A few weeks ago, Carlos Muñoz Portal, a location scout for the Netflix TV series Narcos was killed in Mexico. I wanted to post this in the list, but I was unsure if it was correct to consider him a "media worker"? What do you all think? [2] He did not work for Netflix, so that may change things. The show is still considered "online programming" and a "television series". I'll give this a week or so and then I'll post if there is no reply/consensus. MX () 02:01, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zoila Edith Chiu[edit]

She was reported missing on 7 December 2013 (Source) but was located alive on 24 December 2013 (Source) Would Chiu belong on this list under the disappeared section, or would it be incorrect as she eventually resurfaced alive? Inter&anthro (talk) 20:51, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
