List of places with columnar basaltColumnar jointing — More general article that should be more then a list and host info about other rocks that has columnar joints. Dentren | Talk 18:39, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. Wouldn't you be better off instead expanding the existing articles at Basalt#Columnar basalt and Joint (geology) with relevant material? This is a list, I don't see that renaming it makes sense. If you expand the section Basalt you could spin out a new article, but there's no point hijacking this existing list. Recent move[edit]

This list was recently moved from List of places with columnar basalt to List of places with columnar jointed volcanics. I agree widening the scope is a good idea, but I have some concerns about the new title. I think "columnar jointed volcanics" is not grammatically correct ("columnarly" would be more correct, though ugly), and "volcanics" seems unnecessarily technical. How about we change it to something like List of volcanic rock formations with columnar jointing? --Avenue (talk) 01:14, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good observations, perhapts it could be shortened even more to List of rock formations with columnar jointing. Also, a notability criteria should be introduced since there are far to many places exibiting these features.Chiton magnificus (talk) 07:35, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I like your shortened title. I'll move the list there unless someone objects in the next week. I agree that there are too many such formations to cover them all here. I'm not sure that an explicit notability criterion is needed, but feel free to suggest one. Enforcing the general requirement that reliable sources should be provided would help keep the list focussed on important examples, and might be enough. --Avenue (talk) 00:18, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What is "Notable" ?[edit]

What qualifies as "notable" places for this page? There are several columnar piles in Yellowstone National Park, and these show up in the main Basalt page, and they are not listed here as notable, should they be?. I know of many places with it in my local hills and they are probably not notable. Bwagstaff (talk) 18:28, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
