Example Map Date[edit]

There is a map cited as "Map of Europe in 1923". The file is labelled as being from 1923, however the US Library of Congress cites its publication date as 1920 and notes that its contributor died in 1921. Regardless, the title seems to be off in a other ways, it would seem older than 1920 from the usage of Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic for all of the USSR [which would be correct from 1917–1922], but older than 1920 from its use of "Irish Free State" [gained independence in 1922]; and older than 1923 from its use of "Leningrad (Petrograd)" [changed in 1924] and "Oslo (Christiania) [changed 1924/5]. Because of these discrepancies, I am changing the caption to "Map of Europe from the 1920s". Petropetro (talk) 19:09, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

While I agree with your rational, the wording, "from the 1920s" could mean Europe looked like this from the 1920s on. How about in the 1920s? Murry1975 (talk) 19:40, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
I think Map of Europe in 1920 would be best. --Turkeybutt (talk) 18:03, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Partitions of Poland[edit]

There is nothing about three partitions of Poland (the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and I think it's important that the biggest country in Europe stopped exiting. Over 990,000 square kilometers. There were 3 - in 1772, 1792 and 1795. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.21.107.68 (talk) 14:49, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Timeline of country and capital changes be merged with List of world map changes into a new List of historical geopolitical changes page. Both pages have the same objective, discuss and list historical geopolitical changes. With the use of the term "geopolitical", one can add events such as the start of the shrinking Aral Sea and Lake Chad. Also the formation of reserves, artificial lakes, and the geographical changes (Fertile Crescent is currently less fertile than in ancient times). And the use of the term "historical" is fairly obvious. —SPESH531Other 20:53, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

@Buaidh: So you'd support for the idea if the title of the article was "List of historical political and geographical changes"? I may change the proposed name based on the fact that "geopolitics" is much more than just political behavior and geographical changes.—SPESH531Other 01:41, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Support for merging to List of historical political and geographical changes; the two articles seem to be mostly duplicates anyway. We should keep the table setup and layout from Timeline of country and capital changes. --ERAGON (talk) 21:54, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
  • Support: I agree with ERAGON's comments. My only concern is information overload. It would be nice if the reader had the option of seeing just the major changes. Of course "major" is subjective - what's major to one person might be minor to another and vice versa. Strawberry4Ever (talk) 00:48, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
  • Support: We should merge the two and some other lists of territorial or place name changes into Timeline of geographic and political changes so we can have all the map changes in one page and one list and in chronological order. --Turkeybutt (talk) 17:56, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
  • Support: I agree with Turkeybutt's comments. --Baronedimare (talk) 19:08, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

I have updated my proposal to "Timeline of historical geopolitical changes", as this is a better title to use. What are your opinions? Buaidh, ERAGON, Strawberry4Ever, Turkeybutt JC, BaronedimareSPESH531Other 01:01, 22 September 2016 (UTC);

Sounds good to me.--ERAGON (talk) 09:16, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

States[edit]

Should this include intra-national changes? Like Telangana becoming a state of India? Because if so we'll have to list a *lot* of changes for things like minor changes between US territories (Should we mention that Boston Corner used to be part of Massachusetts? That half of Washington DC was ceded back to Virginia?) I think it should only be supra-national changes; omit anything that exists purely within a single country's boundaries. (However, this still adds lots of changes to the border between the US and Mexico, which has changed dozens of times in the last few decades) --Golbez (talk) 16:34, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Anyone? Because I think I'll start pruning unless people chime in with reasons why this is so. --Golbez (talk) 20:34, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment: Intra-national changes would be a HUGE list. Better broken up by country, not in one article, IMO. See Historic regions of the United States. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 13:28, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Support: It would be a really huge list, but it would have all the events in one big list and in chronological order, it would be convenient along with merging other lists of the same thing if you were to use Wikipedia for making a territorial evolution of all of the countries. But a territorial evolution for each country would be okay too. --Turkeybutt (talk) 18:00, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

2016 Belgium-Netherlands border change[edit]

Please update the article to include this information: [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.176.241.85 (talk) 16:57, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

The headline is "Belgium agrees to hand over splendid stretch of land to their Dutch neighbours... all because of a headless corpse and a body of water". According to the article, "Preparatory work has been done for the swap and the two nations' parliaments should be able to complete a deal sometime in 2016 ...". I agree that this should be noted in List of world map changes, but only after the change is official. Does anyone have more recent information about this? Strawberry4Ever (talk) 00:21, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Czechia?[edit]

Should the government name change to Czechia be mentioned in this article, even if it hasn't officially caught on yet with English speakers? 8.40.151.110 (talk) 03:42, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Support. The new short form name is now in the UNGEN database, it's clearly official even if it isn't commonly used. Astrofreak92 (talk) 14:02, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
