Untitled[edit]

I thought the TV show he was on was "It's Academic" - a quiz show for high school students in the early 80s. "W3" was a contemporary show, for primary school students.--Canopus1968 (talk) 09:23, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Could well have been. There is no source verifying that the W3 statement is true. BreathingMeat (talk) 19:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Is Smith married? Gay? What?

Yes, this is a very good question. I have heard pure gossip, that the reason why the most telegenic and highest educated National member never went above 4th in the party is because there is supposedly a video of him sucking off a bloke in a car park. The Labour party supposedly has the video. I have never met the guy, but I would guess you could tell if he was gay. The absence of a woman in his life would be a clue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.92.197.99 (talk) 06:32, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Again, we should seek reliable sources for this info rather than speculating. BreathingMeat (talk) 19:48, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to change 'antithesis' to 'antipathy', assuming that the latter conveys the meaning the author intended, other wise it doesn't make sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.239.75.92 (talk) 06:21, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

It Academic[edit]

I remember watching this in the late 70s with local schools competing against each other. The "Famous" scene where the quickest on the buzzer question where the Answer was Organism. The Boy slammed his hand on Buzzer and answered Orgasm .The Looks on Lockwood and other pupils faces was priceless!Bet he lives with that for the rest of his life —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.57.23.62 (talk) 22:51, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Links to Articles about Lockwood Smith[edit]

It is a bit too early to write/summarise about his term as speaker etc. However thought it worth the effort to start a list here of articles written about him to save time searching for them later.

(stuff in italics are quotes from article.)
    • Education: He has a PhD. Educated at Auckland Boys' Grammar, Massey University and Adelaide University, gaining a PhD in animal science in 1980.
    • Section at the bottom of the article has stuff about his life before parliament. Raised on his parents' sheep and beef cattle farm in Northland. Of Scottish extraction. Former Presbyterian. A trained singer: baritone. Marketing manager for the Dairy Board (now Fonterra) before entering the House.
    • Says Smith decided to make MPs' expenses public knowledge to show that the scandal over British parliamentary expenses – taxpayers' funds being spent on moats and phantom mortgages – was not happening here. Prime Minister John Key agreed with the move. "At the end of the day, it would be fair to say not everybody was enthusiastic about the information being released," Smith says drily, "but, at the end of the day, the decision was mine. As Speaker, I have to make some of these kinds of decisions." In fact, the lists of MPs' expenses have not reassured the public as much as the Speaker might have hoped.
