Notable visitors[edit]

Regarding the inclusion of Rosamund Grosvenor on the list of visitors: unless someone can make an argument to the contrary, I don't really think Rosamund Grosvenor is notable in her own right. It goes without saying that an individual's friends and relatives will visit them at their home; it's only worth mentioning them by name if they're famous enough to make for an interesting story. Rosamund Grosvenor warrants mention in a biography of Vita Sackville-West, certainly, but this is an article about a house. Present day[edit]

This section of the article is out of date. The gardens are not open for Christian Aid week and have not been for 10 years. The gardens are however open for a number of charity events, pre-booked private tours and garden courses. It would be helpful to users to update this section to reflect the current arrangements. In addition it would be useful to add an External Links heading and include Long Barn's website which contains further information. Long Barn's instagram page also contains many photos of the property but maybe it is not the right place to have a link? It would also be good to have an updated photo of the property. The one in the article is very out of date and taken from the road rather than from within the property. I have tried to make these changes but they were reverted to the out of date entries. I am not sure why, but would be happy to discuss, I am new to editingLbgardenskent (talk) 21:36, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Lbgardenskent - Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. There are a couple of things we need to cover:

Wikipedia:Conflict of interest - Your user name indicates a high likelihood of a connection to Long Barn. You therefore need to understand and follow our guidance on editing with a COI. In a nutshell, people with a COI are strongly discouraged from editing articles to which they are connected;
Wikipedia must not be used for promotion, it is not an advertising platform. The first External link you’ve added is arguably promotional, although it does have some very nice images. I think the second link is unarguably promotional.

I haven’t re-reverted your edit, but the second link does need to go. I’d ask that you remove it yourself. I would be very pleased to help you in editing the article, and we can discuss the improvements you want to make here. Thank you so much for your response, I have removed the second link as requested, apologies. There is a lot that could be done to improve the article, for example- It would be great to update the image in the text box. My attempt just dumped an image at the top right of the article. I clearly have a lot to learn. Also, Further Reading could be updated to include links to various articles that have been published since the 1980s(!), if I can find these links (eg Gardens Illustrated -May 2015,The English Garden -December 2018, Country Living -January 2021). Also there are so many books that could be listed in Further Reading, but I'm not sure if this section is just for links to online pages? The history section could be expanded. VSW was a fascinating and very well documented character and she spent 15-17 years at LB, owning the house for 30 years (1915-1945). Her affairs with Violet and Virginia both took place while she was living at LB. Indeed, Orlando was published in 1928 with photographs from LB. There is a COI so maybe I could give you the information that I have and you could make the edits if they are compliant and you deem them suitable? Lbgardenskent - Thank you for getting back so promptly, and for taking the Instagram out. You’re quite right - the article as it stands is pretty weak. It’s not up-to-date, nor comprehensive, and it lacks citations. And you’re also quite right that the gardens are notable and warrant a decent article. I should be delighted to help you make improvements, based on your detailed knowledge. I do also have a few sources myself, having gathered a fair number of books about VSW when working on Sissinghurst. Lastly, editing Wikipedia can be a bit tricky, e.g. how to get your - much-better - image into the Infobox! But it’s actually fairly simple to learn the basics. I’m not very technical myself, but have managed to master enough to put a reasonable article together. Have a think about what you’d like to add/update/improve and we can take it from there.
