Lou Holtz lived in East Liverpool, OH. for some time. Didn't he play high school football for the East Liverpool Potters?

Lou Holtz is featured in 3 corporate training videos to motivate staff training. Do Right, Do Right II and If Enough People Care. All three are among the best-selling motivational videos of all time. They can be found at (removed spam link)

The "controversy" section needs some work to be made objective and accurate. As it stands now, it suggests that the university paid players, when it was a booster who made gifts to some players. Further, I do not recall whether there were allegations of term-paper writing. Most of the news articles on this subject are only available through paid archives, but this section needs to be more accurate and better sourced. Obviously, at this point the blatantly POV issues have been reverted.
I located and cited the NCAA report on the violations. As best I can parse the report, the Dunbar incident began under Holtz's watch. The NCAA report indicates that a member of the coaching staff undertook an investigation early on and correctly concluded that there was nothing illegal at the time, although there is a weak censure suggesting that they could have forestalled future issues with more aggressive action (and honestly, I'm not exactly sure what to make of that). While ND fits the pattern of schools that ended up on probation subsequent to Holtz's employment, the NCAA report appears to acquit him of any significant liability.

References (or lack thereof)[edit]

I note that an edit today removed the reference to the NCAA violation report.

Personally, I think that it would be appropriate (not least considering Wikipedia policies) to cite information on things like NCAA violations. Should the reference stay in? Should additional references be included for the other NCAA sanctions that are mentioned? --Mr Wednesday 19:52, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I included the official NCAA reports to begin with and am puzzled that anyone would choose to remove the citations. Further, the latest edit indicating that Holtz's involvement was not established by the reports is misguided on two counts, I believe. 1) Holtz was specifically named as having committed an infraction (as referenced in the text) when he was at Minnesota. 2) It is a fundamental truth of college athletics that coaches are held responsible for the NCAA compliance of the programs they head. As for the relevance, I checked the wikipedia entries of other figures involved in large, small and ongoing NCAA compliance controversies and found no consistency, certainly no implemented standard that the controversies not be mentioned. Deprecated template[edit]

College football importance rating[edit]

The rating has recently been changed from low to high. I don't believe that Holtz qualifies as high priority. According to the Classification determinations section, as a former coach, he would only qualify for high priority if he is a "historic person considered fundamental to the understanding of college football". Holtz isn't in that category, so he should be rated "mid". Gopherguy 20:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introductory Paragraph[edit]

there is no way that saying "Lou Holtz is known for his quick wit" is NPOV. He is known more for picking notre dame to win over any other team, having the worst college football game prediction record on ESPN, and for his grating lisp, than he is for his quick wit. Boise State Football[edit]

Lou why are you so biased against Boise State. Is it that you hate to see a Western team on top. Kelin Moore is the top passing Quater back in the nation and Boise is undefeated in two seasons. You whine about Oregon getting beat by Boise the first game of the season and how Oregon had a bad game. Why don't you in all you infinate wisdom schedule another game between Boise and Oregon this season. You are supposed to be such a wizard at football, but you won' give a team like Boise the credit due. I know that Lou Holtz authored at least one additional book. It's been out of print for many years...but I'd still love to find a copy of it.
