"6th black woman to win..."

[edit]

that is not noteworthy. first or second, maybe, but not sixth.

but what about the more OBVIOUS question: is she the first AFRICAN woman? first african of EITHER sex? first african to win ANY of the top 4, for that matter?

the public wants to know! 209.172.25.165 (talk) 06:35, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

She is neither of them. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 21:09, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
ok, but where does she fall in THOSE lists? if she's #2 for any of them, that's a lot more noteworthy than #6 is some tired "black awardees" list. 209.172.25.165 (talk) 07:00, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
She was born in Mexico to African parents. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:10, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
so what? she's listed as a kenyan national; how many kenyan nationals have ever won (US) academy awards?!
tbhotch up there says she is not even the first african to win the specific "best supporting actress" award. so who was before her? i don't even know where to look this stuff up.
if she's a dual national, i suppose we should also be asking where she falls among MEXICAN award winners of the past. salma hayek or anyone similar ever won best supporting actress? 209.172.25.238 (talk) 08:29, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you care and you want those kind of statistics to be included in the article, then find a reliable source that discusses them, and propose some specific language to add to the article. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:37, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
i'm not sure if they should be added or not, but the far LESS noteworthy stat that she is the 6th black woman to win should definitely be removed. any objections? 209.172.25.149 (talk) 22:55, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
hey now - the article has been updated to reflect the fact that she IS the first african (and kenyan specifically, and mexican) to win the award! while i am glad to see this, what's the deal with tbhotch stating pointblank that she wasn't?!
if you don't actually KNOW something, don't answer with such authority! i actually BELIEVED you there!! 209.172.25.86 (talk) 09:13, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
While she is the first African actress to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, she is not the first African person to win an Academy Award to either category you said: "the first AFRICAN woman [...] first african of EITHER sex [...] first african to win ANY of the top 4" [sic]. Charlize Theron won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2004. © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 09:07, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
my first question was not about "an" academy award! i criticized the entry about her being the 6th black to with THIS academy award, and asked whether she was, perhaps, the first african to win THIS award. i expanded that to ask about other awards in the 2 follow-on questions.
your "she is neither" sounds like it was meant for all 3; it would have been a lot clearer had you said "yes, INDEED, she is the first african to win this; however, she is not the first in the additional 2 categories mentioned". 209.172.25.14 (talk) 02:31, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you question would have been more explicit than your "the more OBVIOUS question[s]", I would have said "Yes, she is the first Best Supporting Actress". © Tbhotch (en-2.5). 06:07, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

African? Let's use the proper term, black. Norum 18:36, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But she's not the first African actress to win an Oscar, that honor belongs to Charlize Theron, who was born in and grew up in South Africa. Nyong'o is, of course, the first black actress from Africa to win an Oscar.Syd Henderson (talk) 18:58, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

that is NOT the proper term if the sentence reads "sixth black overall but first African..."!! it is the very distinction we've been discussing! 209.172.25.49 (talk) 02:07, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

suburban?

[edit]

i think her idea of "suburban" may be different from everyone else's. she is the daughter of a govt minister, her mother owns her own company, her relatives are "prominent", and she went to both prep school and US college. in a country like kenya, that is clearly upper class, if not flat-out rich. perhaps "sic" belongs in her quote about being suburban? 209.172.25.165 (talk) 06:29, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think that "upper class" or "rich" people do not live in "suburban" communities? If you do, then I hate to tell you this, but you are wrong. Rich and poor alike live in urban, suburban and rural communities worldwide. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:40, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"suburban upbringing" has a sense to it quite distinct from "living in a suburb". she is clearly describing the family's prosperity, and disingenuously so. 209.172.25.149 (talk) 23:06, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox image

[edit]
Magazine cover
Headshot

I don't want to start an edit war, but why would we consider putting up a magazine cover as the subject's infobox image, even if it's freely licensed, over a clearer headshot? --Krimuk|90 (talk) 07:03, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cropped version
Hi, here is another option! Cropped - a straight forward headshot with less glare and blow out that the flash from the film festival shot has. Missvain (talk) 07:13, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yes. This one looks very good. :) --Krimuk|90 (talk) 07:20, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I actually think the image looks terrible. The grey background and low-quality makes it look like a mugshot. There are far better photographs of her that are of better quality and that don't come from a magazine. It should be changed. Drown Soda (talk) 23:54, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working with Ms. to get a higher resolution image of it, perhaps you'll be more pleased with that version. Anything without blow outs and glares would be ideal. Missvain (talk) 17:26, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Nyong'o spoke at the Time's Up event at the Tribeca Film Festival yesterday (on a panel with Mira Sorvino, Amber Tamblyn, and Cynthia Erivo). Got a couple meh decent quality images, but just leaving them here for others to use (or not) as they see fit, since this article already has plenty of images. I figure if there's more to add about her involvement with Times Up/MeToo it might make sense to include. Great images. How about adding one of them to her "Personal Life" section, maybe? MsScorpioMoon (talk) 16:23, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The first African

[edit]

Hello. There's a part that says, "She's the first African actress to win the award, the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar and the first Mexican actress to win the award..." But wasn't Charlize Theron the first African to win the award in 2003?--Sj105 (talk) 12:17, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, she is. I have modified it. (CC) Tbhotch 20:01, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
