Untitled[edit]

Her father is a Bosniak from Turkey, serbian media is willing to hide this. But a fool can see that her surname testifies of Bosniak heritage, denying this is not neutral. Ancient Land of Bosoni

Can people stop saying she is of turkish ancestry? she is a slavic with a father who was a bosniak , a muslim slav.. turkish is different

Any fool...--Hadžija 00:25, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

It does not mean that she is turk.. Many Bosniaks have moslem names and arent turkish, but slavic. How does this prove that she is turk or whatever? She is a south slav. maybe the last name is moslem but that just means her distant relatives converted for benefits during the ottoman empire

Actually, her father was an American Sheriff from the U.S.A., but Serbian worldwide propaganda manages to conceal this. Surnames don't necessarily mean much, and in this case very little. Both her parents (Rajko and Verica) have Serbian Christian names and there are many Serbian surnames derived from Turkish words, or even Turkish/Muslim names, although those who wear them are neither Turks, nor Muslims. First among those is Radovan Karadžić, Serbian president, nationalist and wanted (alleged) war-criminal, whose surname, common among Serbs, is derived of two turkish words: KARA - black, dark, and (H)ADŽIJA - the one who has visited Mecca, (or Jerusalem, if he were Christian). "Karadžija" is simply a nickname meaning "black adžija", and Karadžić a surname of his descendants. Among other frequent surnames derived from Turkish words are: Hadžić (from -hadžija), Amidžić (from -amidža, uncle), Imširagić (from name Imshir-aga), Memedović (from name Mehmed, Memed) etc. 212.200.56.13 02:13, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Percisely. This, however, does not mean that one is turkish.. Why was it mentioned by the person above?
Because he is an idiot Paulcicero 10:33, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
Hm, it is stranege that Turk has a name Rajko, very very strange. Yesterday somebody wrote in the article that he is a emigrant from Turkey. I would say that chance that Turk has a name Rajko is the same that Serb has a name Muhamed - in other words - null.

Today he showed up on RTS news talking (crying) how he proud is because Marija won the Eurovision contest for Serbia, so I do not think that there is *conspiracy of epic proportions* to hide Marijas father and his nationality. Dragoljub Kojadinovic 23:03, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

What's with you conspiracy nutbags? Serbia is conspiring to hide some pop stars true identity? If they were going to waste time with conspiracies I think they would come up with something that would actually serve their ends. The identity of a singer isn't going to help establish a "Greater Serbia".
And on the note of her background, while she was born in Serbia, I heard her ethnic background is Roma (A.k.A Gypsy), I forget what show it was, don't know how true it is. --Heatsketch (talk) 01:08, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

english translation of winning song is "Destiny" as seen on http://www.diggiloo.net/?2007rs11 - so, please rename. --78.0.182.9 12:37, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Another song version doesn't forcedly mean it is a translation. Sometimes, it can even say totally different things see My Way (song) (compared to Comme d'habitude) 82.240.207.81 13:16, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Lesbian ?[edit]

OH FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE ALL OF THESE COMMEMTS ABOUT HER BEING A LESBIAN ARE IRRELEVANT. SHE SANG A GREAT SONG AT EUROVISION THAT DESERVED TO WIN. WHETHER SHE LIKES WOMEN OR MEN OR BOTH...WHO THE HELL CARES? WHEN WILL ALL THIS CRAZY STUFF ABOUT WHETHER SOMEONE IS GAY OR NOT CEASE? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.37.196.46 (talk) 23:14, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

This is an encyclopedia, everything factual is relevant. If the questions were about whether or not her specific sexuality were acceptable or not, it would be different. Please don't write in all caps. 69.70.124.70 (talk) 02:15, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

"Not Yet Lesbian" In an interview with the Swedish Television Marija got the question "how it is to live as a lesbian in Serbia these days?"
Marija answered
"Well that is not true, everybody thought that. I am not that yet I maybe will be someday".

Is it true she is lesbian ? I've seen that on a youtube comment. It would mean, she is the first lesbian and maybe the first homosexual to win a contest. Eurovision is definitly a place where there's more sexual liberty than on mtv...

Greek media show some innuendos concerning this and in a press conference a journalist said she is supported by women homosexuals. If something is verifiable about it, it should be mentioned in the article Pictureuploader 13:47, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
According to Finnish news she is homosexual. "Nuori nainen puhui Helsingissä rohkeasti homoseksuaalisuudestaan ja syvästä uskostaan Jumalaan." Translated: "The young woman talked courageously in Helsinki about her homosexuality and deep belief in God." source (in Finnish). --Zzzzzzzzzz 14:49, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
I was going to come here and add the same comment. I would like to add, though, that the newspaper in question is yellow journalism. Not very trustworthy, but If it is true, then she has confirmed being a lesbian. Samulili 19:43, 13 May 2007 (UTC) (I noticed the piece news in Ilta-Sanomat but the news is by STT which is like the Reuters of Finland.) Samulili 05:54, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
A respected Finnish newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, wrote [1]: "Vielä semifinaaliharjoitusten aikaan Marija, joka on sinkku, kertoi unelmoivansa tulevaisuudessa miehestä ja lapsista." Translation: "During the semifinals Marija, who is single, told that she dreamt of having a husband and kids in the future." Samulili 05:54, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
If indeed it is yellow journalism, is it possible that they were talking about the song? After all, it is a song about homosexuality and prayer, and it was sung by her. Even if she isn't a lesbian, it is the first pro-homosexuality song (as far as I know) to win Eurovision, which says a lot about how far our society has come (In this part of the world at least). 69.70.124.70 (talk) 02:12, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Lets keep that out of the article until she confirms it. Paulcicero 19:12, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

So where should she confirm "rumours" about her homosexuality? On her homepage? News was published by Finnish News Agency (STT), which is very reliable and trusted news agency. STT never publish any "yellow press" news. And by the way, she looks like a truck driving lesbian. --Zzzzzzzzzz 20:08, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
I think that since she hasn't stated that she is gay and its a pretty serious issue for a person that it doesn't belong to a encyclopedia, based just on a finnish yellow press source and her looks. -Paulcicero 20:51, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
What's so hard to understand? It's not yellow press source. There are some yellow press magazines and news papers in Finland but they didn't say anything about her sexual orientation. --Zzzzzzzzzz 03:06, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

She stated more then few times in Serbian newspapers that she is not a lesbian, also her mother expressed a concern in the interview for Balkanmedia because of the false image that was created by journalists (including her homosexuality) about Marija. Interview (Serbian only) can be found here: http://www.balkanmedia.com/m2/doc/2983-1.shtml

btw "And by the way, she looks like a truck driving lesbian." Please save us form stupid comments like this. Thank you. Dragoljub Kojadinovic 22:47, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Maybe she is lying to her mother about her sexual orientation. I would still bet she is lesbian ;-). Ok let's wait for better sources before adding categories back. --Zzzzzzzzzz 03:06, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
According to this Romanian article on GayOne.ro, she is lesbian: "Ea are un profil de dating pe site-ul Gay Serbia şi potrivit presei locale şi-a mărturisit homosexualitatea în faţa tatălui ei." This translates as "She has a dating profile on the Gay Serbia site and, according to the local press, she told her father about her homosexuality". Of course, this secondary source does not offer any references for this claim, but I think we can corroborate it with the Finnish source. In any case, good on her! Ronline 08:12, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Profile on the Gay Serbia was fake. Here is the whole article published in Kurir newspapers that romanian site talked about(Serbian only, sorry): http://www.gay-serbia.com/press/2004/04-09-29-kurir-tata-ja-sam-lezbejka/index.jsp It states that she admited to her father that she is lesbian, but Kurir is not too much reliable source (People living in Serbia know why :)). Dragoljub Kojadinovic 15:00, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
I also found an article with similar claims, that she was hitting on one of the singers from the Russian trio, at least one of the girls makes these accusations. [2] Unfortunately the article is in Ukrainian and there is no English translation. --Hillock65 17:11, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Keep the lesbian thing strictly out of the article for the moment until/unless we see more reliable sources, and preferably a statement from the woman herself.-h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 15:38, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Marija stated for Serbian press that she is not lesbian. http://24sata.info/5680 (in Serbian) 212.200.56.13 21:18, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

She looks like a lesbian. User:Risteristevski

Nonsense. She looks like a non-centerfold woman just like majority of females - Skysmith 08:18, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Anyone who has actually met lesbians known that lesbians don't exist. Nikola 10:12, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm, now what exactly do you mean by that? Ronline 01:40, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Again somebody who has met only porn "lesbians", probably. Now, in the interviews I've seen, she said "gay is okay to me", meaning that she does not condemn homosexuals (and media tends to interpret that anyone who is not homophobic must be "one of them"). I've seen no confirmation that she is lesbian (despite of the fact that she and her backup singers wore trousers). We could mention the conflicting media accounts but I don't think that anything's confirmed, as of yet anyway. - Skysmith 08:18, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
Hah. My lesbian friends tell me that she is lesbian, but that of course is OR. Nikola 16:58, 20 May 2007 (UTC)
Or wishful thinking? - Skysmith 08:23, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Why would I wish for Marija to be lesbian? Nikola 11:33, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

News: She has said she is a lesbian in an interview with esctoday.com

   http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/8736

"Your song means prayer, but do you pray for the relationship between two girls, or just two lovers? What does the song mean to you personally?

Of course two lovers, it is a song about praying for love. I can’t see the difference between two girls, two boys, and two dogs. It is normal for me. I am thinking that no one needs to know what you, me or her do when we close the door to our bedroom. It is a strange thing that people wants to know, but it is a part of this business and I will just have to understand that, but yes, it is definitely a pray for love – song. Not for anyone special." Esc luver

Looks like pro-GLBT but no confirmation of her orientation - Skysmith 08:21, 18 May 2007 (UTC)
It's not confirmation, and Wikipedia has to strive to be accurate and not rely on speculation, original research, crystalballery or rumours, especially in BLP articles.-h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 14:55, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

First to say, this is not a definite confirmation, but a stating from an interview wich a croatia newspaper did with Marija, that is one proof that she is hetero.

Story magazine, 16th May 2007, #20, ISSN 13335863

No Marija, koju takve gluposti nimalo ne diraju, samo se na sve slatko nasmijala iizjavila da su to gluposti, baš kao i brojni naposi o tome da ima homoseksualnih sklonosti.

But Marija, who these stupidities do not effect, laughed and said that the statements are foolish, also like those that say she is homo sexual.

Greetings from Croatia ! --89.172.117.172 12:12, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

Read this article [3] - Professor Greer seems pretty sure that Marija is a lesbian, not saying that she is correct, but she would probably have some basis for making these remarks. (````)
Still just speculation, regardless of the academic standing of the speculator. We should take Serifovic's word of what she is. (And even if she were a lesbian, "outing" her without her permission would be stupid). - Skysmith 19:42, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Right. And damaging too, some call it slander, in which case action can be taken legally against the morons who keep replacing the comments; particularly if their identities were discovered. Evlekis 19:50, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Helsingin Sanomat

She did come out, shortly after the win at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest on Serbian television, read this if you know Finnish.[4] If you say the most-read non-tabloid newspaper in Finland is unreliable for a source, you have to delete tons of crap from Wikipedia. -- Frous (talk) 00:11, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Reliable sources are one thing, correct information is another - my point being that had the details of the Finnish report been true and carried weight, the news would have travelled fast to her homeland and we'd have had reports in all ex-Yugolslav countries that one of its citizens had admitted liking her own sex. This is something that remans rare, instead of that we get mixed messages on the subject and many of those that claim her being a lesbian are often discovered to originate from scanty or fabricated sources. Imagine Sauli Niinistö telling Bosnian language press that he liked to dress in drag in his spare time - can you see that never making its way back to Finland? OR being taken seriously there? It is the same here. Evlekis (Евлекис) (argue) 09:52, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
As long as their is no reliably-sourced and accurate statement in the article on the matter, there can be no categorisation that claims the singer is a lesbian or whatever. (And from what I read here on the talk page, the few sources in favour of the claim are all pretty second-hand, while Mrs Serifovic's own statements rather speak against her being a lesbian. Now, she might be keeping it in the closet but then it is not WP's job to out her.)
Thus far, the only appearence of the word "lesbian" is a description of the choreography. Otherwise, there is no mention of anything sexual. Hence, I have to remove the categories. Str1977 (talk) 21:53, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

You can do it yourself. Just follow the format of earlier Interwikis to add it. Be careful to include correct diacritics in the link. 惑乱 分からん * \)/ (\ (< \) (2 /) /)/ * 07:57, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Song Stolen?[edit]

There have been claims by media in Britain and some other countries, that the winning song was actually stolen from an old Albanian song an that an ivestigation has been started. There is really great similarity, as far as the music is concerned, but in my opinion, a song does not consist only of music. What about the lyrics? Can anybody tell, which one of the songs is really older, maybe it is vice versa...

The Albanian song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NvjII8_8AM

First, 'Ndarja' isn't an "old Albanian song". It is a ballad composed for Albanian female pop-singer Soni Malaj by Macedonian author Mariano Filipovski 2 years ago. Second, Filipovski himself discarded the amateur charges of Albanian press and stated for Macedonian press that Molitva and 'Ndarja' aren't at all the same song. Link (in Macedonian): http://www.idividi.com.mk/zabava/Showbiz/384398/index.html 212.200.56.13 21:15, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Usually, there's plagiarization accusations for winning songs. I just read today that The Ark's song The Worrying Kind was accused of plagiarizing David Bowie's song Quicksand. I don't think these accusations are important, unless the European Broadcasting Union or some other major organization would claim the song as a plagiarization. I think such accusations are inevitable, considering so many songs have been written, before, and a lot of the songwriting in the contest is rather traditional. Apparently, carbon copies are not tolerated, but the tolerance for near copies seem pretty high. 惑乱 分からん * \)/ (\ (< \) (2 /) /)/ * 09:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

I followed the link of the albanian version of the song above, and as i notice, there are no similarities between two songs at all. Probably the tempo is similar, or maybe the way of singing, theme, but not the song globaly. Boky 13:30, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Photo[edit]

I've replaced the photo with the nicer one. Vanjagenije 12:03, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Uh, what you've actually done is to replace a free-to-use photo with a copyrighted one - a big no-no for articles about living people. The article's blocked so I can't change it back - please could someone else do so? Thanks, 86.152.203.212 14:22, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Done. --Zzzzzzzzzz 00:58, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

Controversies?[edit]

Why is Maria's political orientation considered a contraversy? She can support whatever political party she wants, are we living in fascism where certain political views are forbidden?? --24.150.77.3 (talk) 17:12, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

I totally agree with this. The "Radical" party's ideals stand for good things if anyone actually took the time to see what the party's platform was. I also don't understand why "speculation" is left on wikipedia. Everyone and anyone can speculate anything and publish it in a biased source. Of course, since she is Serbian, this type of behaviour is deemed acceptable by 'western progressives'. My 2 cents.

Probably because the Radical and Progressive Parties of Serbia are not known for their tolerance of LGBT rights, nor of people of Turkish/Bosniak/Muslim Slav background. I think Serifovic if she is guilty of anything, is guilty only of naivety in politics. And that's not a hanging offence, is it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.191.66.230 (talk) 16:05, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

The Radical Party is not known for their tolerance period. Given the politics and actions of both the party and its blood-stained founder, focusing on its opinion "LGTB rights" is pretty misguided. Str1977 (talk) 21:47, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
