The Ascent of Man Episode 4[edit]

Can anyone confirm the symbol's origins in alchemy and its relation to the property of hardness? (talk) 22:18, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Don't know about "property of hardness", but an association between the planet Mars and the metal iron probably played a role -- see Classical planets in Western alchemy etc... -- AnonMoos (talk) 14:44, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

I think people living today where only guns kill are not likely to realize that the arrow in the male symbol is meant to represent an actual arrow (or perhaps a spear). Im pretty sure my high school biology teacher, at least, thought it was meant to represent the penis. soap 16:52, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
