Meelee vs cold[edit]

What is EXACT difference between Mêlée weapon and Cold weapon? I see here A melee weapon (...) or cold weapon is any weapon that does not involve a projectile but on Cold weapon page I see that mêlée weapon is actually a subcategory of cold ones. --Wicked 03:31, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge[edit]

I've suggested merging List of mêlée weapons with this page with since they duplicate much of the material. (see lead paragraphs). The list is also and serves mainly as a directory; a category would be better. Gwinva (talk) 03:12, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. The separation into two separate articles is in accordance with the wikipedia standard. One article discusses the history, social and cultural significance, etc. and the other article lists the items which are of the article's topic but would be messy to include in the original article. True, right now the lead in paragraphs are very similar, but perhaps it is the "list of" article who should lose those paragraphs. Ordosingularis (talk) 12:51, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If the wikipedia rule is to separate lists from content then fair enough. However, it is difficult to see the Melee Weapon article developing further than a few paras which it shares with the list, because most of the social context is in Melee. A longer article could be made here by discussing the use of melee weapons through the ages but it would take a dedicated editor. Merging the content here (because it is fuller) as context to the list then deleting Melee Weapon is simpler. Suggest someone takes action or removes the tag though - this discussion has generated 3 posts in 18 months Monstrelet (talk) 17:09, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect redirection[edit]

The top of this page says that it redirects from the page about mêlée weapons, however this is seemingly the wrong way around. In following the common style of Wikipedia and indeed the English language, accents can't be dropped when using the word in English if the dropping of the accents would lead to the word being pronounced differently. Damascus Steel Myth[edit]

Damascus Steel Myth present in article for no apparent reason. Have deleted. Despite countless just as important advances in metal work and so forth, the Damascus Steel myth was picked out for no particular reason.

Origin of this term[edit]

Earliest use of this term seems to date to the 1980s. A survey of 1990s usage on google books shows it was overwhelmingly a term of gaming culture.[1]

The earliest occurrence outside of gaming culture or fantasy literature I can find dates to 1995:

Steven Eden, Military Blunders: Wartime Fiascoes from the Roman Age Through World War I, MetroBooks, 1995, p. 33

and in a more academic setting 1996:

Hugh Elton, Warfare in Roman Europe Ad, 350-425, Oxford Classical Monographs, Clarendon Press, 1996, p. 67, 109.

These two examples are everthing google books has from the 1990s, all other occurences are from a gaming or fantasy setting. From about 2004, examples of use in popular literature dealing with a historical topic becomes slightly more widespread,[2][3] but the term is still overwhelmingly one of gaming culture. It still does not appear to see any use in specialist literature. So it would appear that this is another example of a term that owes its notability outside of gaming/roleplaying/fantasy subculture to the existence of an unverified Wikipedia article. This article was created in 2005, exactly the time when usage began to become more widespread. Wikipedia should be extra careful about re-importing terms it has helped popularize from less than excellent publications which date to after the creation of the Wikipedia article. It is no secret that even academic authors are guilty of doing research-by-Wikipedia (not that there is any guilt in that, if you remember to painstakingly verify everything you found on the wiki, the guilt is in forgetting this more labour-intensive part of the process of consulting Wikipedia) --dab (𒁳) 09:33, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
