Is Ngerulmud Capital?

[edit]

There are no reliable sources which say Ngerulmud is the designated capital of Palau. There are sources which say the new capitol building is nearest to Ngerulmud village, but most (all that I have read, including those on the Ngerulmud page) retain Melekeok as the capital or don't specify the name of the capital. I'd guess that Melekeok state is the designated capital rather than a tiny village within it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.6.71.1 (talk) 22:38, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree, especially since Ngerulmud has a population of zero according to this page. There's another error here, the page quotes the population of Melekeok state as 391, but then goes on to give a breakdown of the villages populations which totals 401. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.20.234.235 (talk) 17:06, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a reference for the figure of 391, which does appear in the census. I don't know where the figures for individual settlements come from, but the names of the settlements do not appear in that document. There seems to be a distinction between "legal residence" and "usual residence" which might be the issue. Especially Lime (talk) 12:29, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for move of capital

[edit]

Does anyone have any information on WHY the capital was moved from Koror to Melekeok? I've been looking for anything I can find and nothing says anything about the reason or purpose of the move, only thing I can find are questions as to whether the capital is Melekeok or Ngerulmud.

All I have is a personal guess that (given that Melekeok seems no more unique an area than the rest of the island and the new capital building stands fairly alone) the government may be trying to construct a new (possibly planed) capital away from established population centers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.202.113.212 (talk) 01:40, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
