Men's basketball article[edit]

I definitely believe that this would be a positive change to make Wikipedia more homogenous. I see no problem with splitting the section off into a new article. Macraw83 17:15, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many schools have pages for specific sports teams. It's the same idea as splitting Miami Hurricanes from University of Miami — you can cover the subject in greater detail. Needs improvement[edit]

I removed the Title IX material. There is no causal connetion between Title IX and the decision to drop programs. University of Miami has many ways to comply with Title IX, including adding more funds to athletics, shifting funds from football to men's crew, or cutting men's crew. It made its own decision to cut the sports, but that concluson was not dictated by Title IX.

There are 15 teams but only three are covered. What about the other twelve teams?

Are the comments about the Seminoles and Gators rivarlies just football or all sports? They are described as "athletic rivals" but then the number of football games is discussed.

What about the contract to play in the contract to play at Dolphin Stadium through 2033?

Men's Diving[edit]

"Miami" does not field a "diving team," as swimming & diving are considered one sport and scored together in collegiate team competition, like track & field; hence why swimming & diving is not listed among the men's teams at Miami [1] and why the school is not included in the ACC swimming & diving standings [2]. All that survives of the previous men's swimming & diving team is a single men's diver (Reuben Ross) who competes on an individual level in NCAA competition and is listed on the women's swimming & diving roster.[3].-PassionoftheDamon (talk) 18:55, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The claim "Of the $46.8 million in annual athletic expenditures, $23.9 million were spent on men's team, $9.8 million were spent on women's teams, and $13 million can not be allocated based on gender" was most certainly not sourced. Nor was it correct to attribute Donna Shalala's "strong support" for Title IX, expressed in an open letter, to the university as a whole, seeing as how the university in 2000, one year prior to her tenure as president, was explicit that it was forced to cut men's swimming & diving to comply with Title IX. As to the statement regarding graduation rates among male and female athletes, that has nothing to do with "Gender equity" and more properly belongs in a section on graduation rates, along with APR statistics and such. All that might even be besides the point, anyway, because the comparison between graduation rates among the general student population and those of student-athletes, broken down by gender, could be considered to constitute OR. -PassionoftheDamon (talk) 16:17, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The athletic expenditure statistics was from the same source as the participation statistics -- UM data filed with the US Dept of Education. Again, UserPassionoftheDamon is very confused about Title IX and mistakes cause and effect. Title IX requires equal access to both genders in federally funded education programs. It does not 'require' UM to cut men's swimming. (Men's diving was not cut.) UM can comply with Title IX in a number of ways: 1) it could increase funding for women's sports, 2) it could reallocate revenues among men's sports or 3) it could reduce participation in men's sports. UM chose to cut men's swimming as a budgetary matter, not as a Title IX compliance matter. So the language that User:PassionoftheDamon is trying to repeatedly insert is inaccurate and very POV-pushing. The graduation rates for male and female athletes are required to be reported and are not OR. Racepacket (talk) 21:34, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We now have five experienced Wikipedians expressing concerns that the University of Miami family of articles rely too heavily on the UM websites as a source.
