The recent revision of the article relies mainly on Hansard and the History of Parliament on-line for Sadler in Parliament (with the caveat that Hansard Millbank for whatever reason doesn't appear to cover 1829). Out of parliament, Seeley's biography of Sadler is semi-adulatory and horribly vague; Driver's biography of Oastler should shed some light on Sadler, but has its problems (for example, Oastler is encouraged to move from Methodism to CofE because Sadler is CofE, but 20 pages later we are told Sadler is a Methodist). That leaves any account heavily reliant on contemporary newspapers, most notably the Leeds Intelligencer written by partisans of Sadler (if not by Sadler himself), and the Leeds Mercury, whose editor was unremittingly hostile to Sadler and gave that hostility precedence over accuracy in reporting. Two points arise from that

  1. the revision was not intended to be OR, but the choice of which items of news go into the article carries the risk of forcing upon events a spurious narrative thread. Hopefully the article has avoided that, but in the absence of supporting evidence in the contemporary newspapers it has not followed a narrative thread about the Leeds election of 1832 to be found in a number of accounts of the history of factory legislation or of the Ten-Hour Movement; that it was fought (and hard-fought) on the issue of factory reform between those who wanted reform and those who strongly opposed it.
  2. the Leeds Mercury threw a lot of mud at Sadler in 1832, and repeated the exercise against Sir John Beckett, the Tory candidate in the 1834 by-election, but Beckett came within a whisker of winning the by-election. It would be nice to know (and OR to guess) why.Rjccumbria (talk) 22:19, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
