Programming Engine[edit]

is it true that this game used the SCUMM engine? (author unknown)

I have no idea, but I did find more information on the subject in Wikipedia, "...SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) is a scripting language developed at LucasArts (known at the time as Lucasfilm Games) to ease development of the graphical adventure game Maniac Mansion..." I think Blizzard, Hasbro, Atari, Infrogrames are all French. Lucas is probably American, so I'm not sure about the connection. Funny name for a game engine though. Good question. Manual doesn't say other than DirectX 8 & Bink Video. It would be cool to find out. I have all the names of the programmers if you want them. Imlookingnow (talk) 22:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it does. It is Humongous Entertainment SPUTM v10.0 with most of 16bits-related graphics in engine extension. --Sevua (talk) 22:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, Although it uses SCUMM it is *not* compatible with scummVM Donkyhotay (talk) 20:26, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updates[edit]

  • I punched in some text from the manual I had. I hope it helps some. Imlookingnow (talk) 22:29, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Added reference to fan mod, Moonbase Commander Console, and the game's recent 2014 re-release on Steam. DrNicket (talk) 21:13, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Patches[edit]

v1.1 is available now from Atari even though Humongous looks like it was closed down: http://mbc.strategyplanet.gamespy.com/ has this link: ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/moonbase/MBC_Update_v1.1.exe but, always check out the source before you download ANY *.exe's. Clones[edit]

Not certain if it's entirely worthy of mention on this page but there are some fans that have made an effort at creating an open source version of moonbase commander in python. Sadly it's borderline alpha/pre-alpha at this time. Link for this is at: http://code.google.com/p/tether —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.170.80.2 (talk) 16:25, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although progress is slowly being made, project tether is still at alpha status and isn't very playable. I don't think it's worthy of mention on here yet and I'm one of the main developers for it! Donkyhotay (talk) 20:25, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised someone put a link to project tether here, though at this point it is one of the few active Moonbase Commander sites left, especially since it appears the strategyplanet page is no longer active. If it doesn't come back in a few weeks I will remove it. On a side note MoonPy, a python based remake of Moonbase Commander developed by project tether, is at beta stage and fully playable. I think it needs more notability though before it is deserving of mention here beyond the link that was placed. Donkyhotay (talk) 21:24, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is a description of challenge mode levels necessary?[edit]

Recently a description of each of the challenge mode levels has been added onto the page. Although a description of the single-player modes available in the game are relevant I do not think listing each level is. That is something that should belong more in a strategy guide rather then an encyclopedia entry. I will leave it as is for now to give the author a chance to explain their reasons for wanting to keep it as is but if no good reasons are forthcoming I will delete it in a few days. Donkyhotay (talk) 18:36, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since the author has not made any mention of this issue I have gone ahead and removed the descriptions. I have also added some information on the multiplayer section of the game since previously only the single player was described. Donkyhotay (talk) 21:45, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No references[edit]

Maybe someone could add references to that middle section about multiplayer, or a link to the fan-made engine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123fourfive (talkcontribs) 06:18, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

the fan-made multiplayer launcher doesn't exist anymore as far as I know. There is fan-made engine of Moonbase Commander being used in an open source remake called MoonPy however it doesn't yet meet notability guidelines yet to warrant even mention on this page.
