Merger proposal[edit]

Temples of a Million years should be merged into this article. The two articles are about exactly the same topic, and "mortuary temple" is the standard term for it. "Temple of a Million years" is a rough translation of the Egyptian term, but aside from never being used in English, it doesn't even fit the other naming conventions (the atypical plural, the erratic capitalization). The article belongs here. A. Parrot (talk) 05:30, 24 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Having thought about this, you are probably right, although Mortuary Temple is probably the wrong term as well, would Mortuary Temple (Ancient Egyptian) be better ? That way other cutlures can have articles, Mortuary Temple (Ancient Greek), Mortuary Temple (Ancient Roman), etc. if they have such things, so it should be merged and moved. Temple Of A Million Years is a much more specific term (the article refers only to those on the West Bank at Thebes. Markh (talk)
Do other cultures have mortuary temples that are called mortuary temples? Rome had temples to deceased emperors, and probably a lot of other nations with divine monarchies did, too; but as far as I know the term "mortuary temple" isn't used for them. If disambiguation is necessary, I'd rather call it "Egyptian mortuary temple". I think parentheses in titles are clumsy and should only be used when necessary, and I don't think "ancient" needs to be specified, because Muslims and Christians don't build temples to dead people. I'm not sure. Markh (talk) 12:32, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I went through the first thirty pages of Google results for "mortuary temple", and nearly everything was Egypt-related or irrelevant to temples of any kind. There was one reference to the Hypogeum of Ħal-Saflieni as a "mortuary temple" (a dubious label, in my opinion) and a 50-year-old journal article about Maya temples. For the most part, it seems, people simply don't use the term except for Egyptian temples.
Disambiguation is only necessary when there's another article with the same title. There isn't another such article now, and there may never be one. For now, I think this article can stay where it is. A. Parrot (talk) 19:58, 1 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I merged most of the content from "Temples of a Million years" with some of the content from this article, and added a couple of sentences of my own. It's a slight improvement, and at least we don't have the silly duplication anymore. As for the issue raised by User:Markh, I understand the concern, but don't see the need to disambiguate this article's title at the moment. A. Parrot (talk) 04:00, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
