Edit request to expand and update article[edit]

On behalf of Move, I am proposing expanded and updated Move (company) and Realtor.com articles as part of my work at Beutler Ink. Given my conflict of interest, I will not edit either article directly and ask independent editors to review them for accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability. During this project, Move has provided feedback to ensure accuracy. I've saved my Move draft here (and, if you're curious, my Realtor.com draft here).

I'll briefly identify some problems with the current Move article:

  • Most importantly, quite a few of the sources are inappropriate for Wikipedia, such as press releases, company websites, and non-reliable publications
  • Almost all of the content is presented in bulleted lists, which goes against Wikipedia's Manual of Style, and should be converted into prose.
  • The current "Criticism and controversy" section is partly unsourced and its contents should probably be integrated with the company's history.
  • I've also formatted the infobox and inline citations correctly, and worked hard to present a neutral company overview and history.

I'm comfortable splitting this edit request into multiple requests, if preferred, and I am happy to address any questions or concerns that may arise during the review process. Thanks in advance for your consideration and help. Inkian Jason (talk) 20:39, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've suggested some tweaks at User talk:Inkian Jason/Move (company), though there's no reason they could not be applied after the fact. Overall, the draft seems like an improvement, aside from what I flagged, though I have to reviewed every single word of it and its sourcing. And of course the logo should be retained.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  12:20, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SMcCandlish: Thank you for taking time to review the proposed draft. I've made some changes to the draft based on your feedback. Do you have any other concerns, or are you willing to copy over the markup appropriately? Thanks again. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:12, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That was just a quick copy-editing skim. Someone who deals more with COI/PROMO potential should probably examine this in more detail, though so far this looks to me like a good example of what very careful paid editing can do.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  16:27, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SMcCandlish: Thanks, do you know any other editors who might be interested in this topic and could offer input and help? I've posted to several WikiProjects about this draft and the Realtor.com draft. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:35, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No idea right off-hand; it's not something I deal with. I think there are people who periodically look for {{Edit request}} and respond to it.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  16:38, 8 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Overview"[edit]

Since I'm struggling to find volunteers to review the draft in its entirety, I am splitting the request into multiple parts. For now, I am seeking an editor to review just the "Overview" section seen here: User:Inkian_Jason/Move (company)#Overview. This section is just 3 short paragraphs long, so I'm hoping this is a much easier request for someone to review and copy over appropriately. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 22:10, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The information provided under reference #5 is not substantiated by the source ("Move's portfolio of software businesses includes FiveStreet, ListHub, Market Snapshot, Reesio, and Top Producer, as of December 2016.").
  • The source given for the information under reference #1 does not give a page number ("The company also operates Doorsteps.com (following its acquisition in 2013), MortgageMatch.com, Moving.com, Relocation.com, and SeniorHousingnet.com").
  • "Among other properties" is too nebulous a claim statement to be adequately substantiated by the given sources.
  • Under leadership, these people are already listed in the infobox. While that infobox is inordinately long, having the names listed there is preferable and more concise than listing them in the text. Clarified: Text may be added to the infobox as an "at-a-glance" as well as in the main text. Please feel free to add them to both locations.  Spintendo  ᔦᔭ  12:50, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for reviewing this request. I've replaced the inline citation and removed "as of December 2016", in order to make the article move evergreen. Reference #1 does not include a single page number because the internet properties are mentioned on different page numbers. I assumed "among other properties" was preferred over listing every single internet property, but you're welcome to suggest an alternative phrase. Please keep in mind, some of the properties mentioned in the "Overview" are further detailed in the overall draft — this section is intended to serve as a snapshot of the company's portfolio. Additionally, "Overview" sections often include mention of key personnel, even when names are included in the infobox. Shouldn't the infobox include details confirmed by the article's prose? I've re-opened this edit request for further consideration and feedback, thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:28, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

no Declined You're correct about the infobox. You can place the information there and in the main text if you like. If I understand you correctly, you're not comfortable providing the page numbers from a 96 page document because locating that information is my responsibility. Is this correct? Please advise.  Spintendo  ᔦᔭ  19:50, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Spintendo: Thanks for revisiting your comments about adding mention of key personnel in the overview and infobox, and sorry for any confusion about the page numbers. What I mean to say is there are many different page numbers for each. For example, FiveStreet on pages 6, 29, 61, and 77; ListHub is mentioned on pages 3, 6, 7, 27–28 30, 40, 43, and 55. Since most are mentioned in the "Software and Services" section on page 6, I've added that page number and hope that covers it! Inkian Jason (talk) 22:05, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

History, part 1 ("Homestore")[edit]

Further to the above request, I propose replacing the current article's "Products and services", "History", and "Criticism and controversy" sections with the proposed "History" section seen here, which seeks to fold these three sections (each of which include unsourced and inappropriately sourced content) into a more accurate and chronological company history. Not to mention, the article currently presents information in the form of a bulleted list, which should be converted into prose.

For this request, I'd like to focus on the "Homestore" subsection specifically, so I'm not asking a volunteer to review too much content at once. Thank you. Inkian Jason (talk) 17:45, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple requests on one page (3-in-1) per:WP:EDITREQ I have extra time now, so I can review this request. (Re-review is completed. Please see below for results.) Spintendo  ᔦᔭ  19:50, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

no Declined This proposal contains several instances of insufficiently paraphrased material, shown above. As I've mention before, this material must be written in your own words, using your own phrasing. Kindly resubmit your edit request after these changes have been incorporated into your proposal.  Spintendo  ᔦᔭ  20:56, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Spintendo: I've made some changes to the proposed wording. Some of the similar words are technical terms (such as "settled" and "wholly-owned subsidiary", which is a specific type of subsidiary), or company names. In the final example, the copied text is their job titles which can't really be paraphrased. I hope you don't mind I've re-opened this request, and thanks for your reconsideration. Inkian Jason (talk) 21:19, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but you've changed very little in the text. You took sentences that another person formulated on their own, using their own ideas on how to say something about that subject, and appropriated it for your own use here. You rearrainged a few minimal words, but kept intact someone else's phrasing, and then presented it as your own. This is unacceptable. I suggest that you consult WP:PLAG to better understand what is expected from your edit requests here. Feel free to consult other editors for their input on this matter as well. Until then the request is closed.  Spintendo  ᔦᔭ  22:36, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request to add "Overview" section[edit]

On behalf of Move, I am requesting the addition of a new "Overview" section to provide a snapshot of the company. I submitted this request before (see here), and I've replied and updated the draft based on that feedback. The section for editors to consider can be seen here. Thank you. 1. I have reviewed this section again. The reference provided and shown in your proposal under the number 1 claims page 6. The first sentence in the 'Overview' section states "Move was established in Delaware under the name InfoTouch Corporation in 1993." Nowhere on page 6 is that claim made.
  2. It already states two times in the article that the company is based in Santa Clara. Three times is not necessary.
  3. The other references you have provided are not acceptable per WP:RS.

Request to review draft article[edit]

Resolved

@SMcCandlish: I am still looking for a volunteer editor to review this proposed draft as an expanded and improved version of the existing Wikipedia article. Your Realtor.com review was very helpful, and I was wondering if you'd consider taking another look at this related draft as well, especially now that you're a bit more familiar with the topic. I recognize and appreciate that reviewing drafts is time consuming, and I want to be respectful of your time and energy. If you're not interested, I understand. As a reminder, you offered these comments above, and I've already made some edits to the draft based on the feedback you left here. Thanks for your consideration. Inkian Jason (talk) 17:38, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done I have replaced, in whole, the text of the article with a draft text developed by the above COI editor. In doing so I considered the following:
  • The draft text resolves a prose maintenance tag that is unresolved on the original article.
  • The draft text maintains notable critical information on the company but seamlessly integrates it into the text instead of making it a standalone section which is more consistent with WP:NOCRIT which generally advises against standalone criticism / controversy sections.
  • The draft text is significantly better sourced and more detailed.
  • In the last five months there have been no substantial edits to the article that would indicate such a wholesale replacement would be disruptive.
  • Some of the sources in the draft text are subject-specific RS. For example, inman.com, is certainly RS for news related specifically to the RE industry but would not be RS for news on astrophysics or baroque opera. While subject-specific RS may not always be as desirable as universal RS, as used in this article it provides functional information (e.g. names of executives) that is not subject to much in the way of interpretation, as opposed to analytical information.
I made the following changes in the implementation of the draft article:
  • I removed the external links section which provides an official company link since an external link to the company website is already included in the infobox (per WP:ELMINOFFICIAL).
Chetsford (talk) 23:05, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Chetsford: Thank you for reviewing the proposed draft and updating the article. I did notice the logo remains hidden in the infobox, is that something you'd be able to quickly fix? Otherwise the article looks good! Thanks again. Inkian Jason (talk) 16:00, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
sorry - fixed Chetsford (talk) 17:18, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem! Thanks again. Inkian Jason (talk) 17:34, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This all seems reasonable. I worked with IJ on smoothing out this and related articles, over a span of some time, and with an eye to WP:CCPOL and WP:COI concerns. There's probably always some room for tweaking, but these drafts have been ready for primetime for a while now. I just didn't feel it appropriate to mainspace them myself, having worked directly on the content revisions.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  02:54, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to add mention of Opcity acquisition[edit]

Hello again! I am back with an additional edit request, which I'm submitting on behalf of Move. In August, Move agreed to acquire Opcity, per this source, this source, this source, and others. I propose updating the article accordingly, and offer the following addition for community review:

Move acquired Opcity, the Austin, Texas-based real estate technology company, for $210 million in 2018. The company, which developed a platform that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to match potential home buyers with agents,[1] will continue to operate as an independent business.[2][3]

I don't edit articles directly because of my conflict of interest, so I'm seeking assistance from volunteer editors to update the article appropriately. You're welcome to copy and paste the above markup, if helpful. @Chetsford: Since you assisted with the above request, I wonder if you'd be willing to take a look at adding the proposed content to the bottom of the "Move, Inc." section. Thanks for your consideration. Inkian Jason (talk) 20:02, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Done That seems like a fine suggestion to me. Chetsford (talk) 05:57, 18 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Chetsford: Thanks for your help. Do you think the Realtor.com article should be updated in any way as well? Sources like this briefly describe the acquisition's impact on Realtor.com. Inkian Jason (talk) 12:05, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I think that makes sense. Were you thinking we should use the same text as this article or different text? Chetsford (talk) 00:51, 20 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Chetsford: I think the same text would be suitable at the bottom of the "Public listing and acquisition" subsection. Do you mind update the Realtor.com article, or shall I submit a separate request over there? Inkian Jason (talk) 14:43, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed updates[edit]

Hello again! I am back to propose some updates to the current Wikipedia article on behalf of Move.

In order to illustrate the proposed changes and make implementation as easy as possible, I saved the markup of the current Wikipedia article here and made updates myself. This diff shows the specific markup edits, and below I've outlined the changes in more detail:

  • There have been some C-suite personnel updates, so I've updated the infobox and Operations section appropriately.
  • Some of the brands have been integrated or sold, so I've updated the infobox and History section appropriately.
    • More specifically, OpCity was integrated into Realtor.com, Avail was acquired, and Top Producer was sold.
  • I've changed "News Corporation" to "News Corp" per News Corp.

I don't edit articles in the main space directly because of my conflict of interest, so I'm seeking assistance from volunteer editors to update the article appropriately. @Chetsford: Since you've assisted with requests in the past, I wonder if you'd be willing to take a look and copy over the updated article markup? I should note, in my draft space I've disabled the categories and logo image in the infobox for copyright purposes. Otherwise, I think the proposed changes are generally noncontroversial and should all be sourced appropriately. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 17:58, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inkian Jason, thanks for the proposed update; I haven't gone through all of it (and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to handle the full request), but it seems uncontroversial for the most part – one thing I noticed while skimming the proposed change is that the infobox would list 8 key people, which seems excessive. The template documentation recommends listing up to four key individuals closely associated with the company, which strikes me as a good rule of thumb – could you cut down the list? On a minor related formatting note: It is recommended to use {{Unbulleted list}} instead of regular bullets to list people in infoboxes. Best, Blablubbs|talk 14:20, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Blablubbs: Thanks for reviewing!  Doing... I'll update the draft momentarily. The personnel updates are a good chunk of the proposed changes, so hopefully the rest of the request won't take long to review. I'll let you know when I've made changes to the draft based on your feedback. Inkian Jason (talk) 14:46, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Blablubbs: I've removed four names from the infobox to more closely match the C-suite personnel mentioned in the article body. I hope this helps! Inkian Jason (talk) 21:57, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That seemed pretty straightforward to me. I've updated it in the page. Please let me know if I missed anything. Chetsford (talk) 00:38, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Chetsford: Thank you for reviewing, but I am not actually seeing changes to the article. Inkian Jason (talk) 14:30, 5 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Neither am I! I wonder what I did?! Anyway, check now --- Chetsford (talk) 22:21, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Chetsford: Perfect! Thanks so much for revisiting. Inkian Jason (talk) 17:05, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

More proposed updates[edit]

Hello again! I'd like to submit a 3-part edit request to bring this article up to date. Below are three requests separated by subsection for easier review.

Infobox[edit]

1. Currently, the infobox mentions the following key personnel:

  • David Doctorow (CEO)
  • Bryan Charap (CFO)
  • Mickey Neuberger (CMO)
  • Rachel Morley (CPO)
  • Ben Rubenstein (CRO)[1]

This list is outdated. I suggest replacing with the following:

Operations[edit]

2. Currently, the Operations section says:

History[edit]

I propose adding mention of the UpNest acquisition to the bottom of the History section. Suggested text, based on Inman.com and MarketWatch:

  • Move acquired UpNest in June 2022. UpNest connects home sellers and buyers with local agents competing for business. Users who submit leads through the marketplace receive proposals from three to five agents within twelve hours.[1][2]

I've posted a similar request at Talk:Realtor.com. If this update is appropriate for Wikipedia, can someone please copy over the proposed markup on my behalf? User:Chetsford and User:CNMall41, I am putting these requests on your radar since you've reviewed similar suggestions before.

I'm happy to address questions or concerns. Thanks for your continued consideration and assistance! Inkian Jason (talk) 19:50, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I added a sentence but not exactly how you proposed. It covers the acquisition and what it does. Talking about timing of connective agents is too promotional in my opinion so was not added.
@CNMall41: Thanks for reviewing this request and updating the article on my behalf. I've posted a similar request here as well as two others above, if you're interested. Either way, thanks again for your help! Inkian Jason (talk) 14:50, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Revert request[edit]

Hello! On behalf of Move, I'd like to request a revert of this edit by an unregistered user in December 2022. While Morley is no longer employed by Move / Realtor.com, there are no sources saying she was fired, so the text "who was subsequently fired a few months later" should be removed. Alternatively, editors may prefer to remove mention of her altogether, since she no longer holds the position. I will let editors decide how to address this unsourced text, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 16:04, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done Remember that WP:BLP violations, especially those that might paint the subject (in this case Morley) in a negative light, can and should be removed immediately and without prior debate. I understand that this conflicts with WP:COI, so WP:COMMONSENSE applies. If you see this kind of unambiguous BLP violation, feel free to remove it. What I would do is open a COI edit request afterwards in which you ask for the removal to be reviewed. Anyway, happy editing! Actualcpscm (talk) 14:51, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support that advice. Based on your transparency with the community, I would support the action as its not being done in a nefarious way or in an attempt to promote your client. BLP violations should be taken seriously. --CNMall41 (talk) 22:33, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"The move"[edit]

Hello! On behalf of Move, I'd like to submit a minor request for the Operations section. The first sentence says, "The move was established in Delaware under the name InfoTouch Corporation in 1993." This should read "Move was established in Delaware under the name InfoTouch Corporation in 1993." Can someone please update the article on my behalf? @CNMall41: I am putting this request on your radar, since you've helped previously. Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 13:37, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. Thanks for pointing that out! Cerebral726 (talk) 13:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't ignoring you. I saw the ping but also saw Cerebral took care of it already. Cheers!--CNMall41 (talk) 20:10, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update request: CEO[edit]

Hello! On behalf of Move, and as part of my work at Beutler Ink, I'd like to submit a request to update the company's article. Currently, the infobox lists David Doctorow as the CEO, and the Operations section says, "David Doctorow was named CEO in January 2020." Per the business newspaper Australian Financial Review, I propose updating the infobox and Operations section to mention Damian Eales as the current CEO.

In the infobox, please change "David Doctorow" to "Damian Eales".

The sentence "David Doctorow was named CEO in January 2020" is correct, so I will let editors decide if keeping mention of a former CEO is helpful to readers. Otherwise, I suggest updating the article with text along the lines of, "Damian Eales became the CEO of Move in 2023.[1]"

Can an editor please review and update the article on my behalf?

Thanks! Inkian Jason (talk) 16:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cerebral726: Since you reviewed the above request, might you be able to take a look at this proposed change, too? Inkian Jason (talk) 14:16, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the article. Thanks for providing the source and for the ping! --Cerebral726 (talk) 15:02, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
