Songs Inspirations[edit]

I noticed while watching this episode that many of the songs written had a similar feel to other broadway musical songs. One in particular sounded just like a song from "Grease", and the last song felt like it came from "Wicked." If anybody else agrees with me, there may be an inspiration song behind each musical number that can be found and identified. Mgius 09:31, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, I thought that "Cox's Rant" sounded like it was out of The Pirates Of Penzance (more specific, "I am the very model of a modern Major-General"), and "For the last time, I'm Dominican" was very much like West Side Story (specifically "Mambo".) I appreciate the Gilbert & Sullivan reference for "Cox's Rant" I still feel that "For the last time, Im Dominican should have a reference to West Side Story, since we have the Rant reference and the Grease Reference already. I think that all the songs were obvious homage to other broadway musical songs, and it will help readers with the unique style of this episode. Also, while rewatching the episode, I saw that the end of "act 1" with the medly of songs was homage to Les Miserables, and in fact the line "have to face the future / when the truth comes out," is homage to the line "there is a life about to start/ when tomorrow comes" MoonKnight52 16:54, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
MoonKnight, Wikipedia's policies don't allow us to include the sort of material you're suggesting we include. Wikipedia has a policy called "no original research," which states that we are not allowed to include "unpublished facts, arguments, concepts, statements, or theories, or any unpublished analysis or synthesis of published material that appears to advance a position." You can read the policy in full detail at Wikipedia:No original research.
When we say that "The Rant Song" sounds like it was written by Gilbert & Sullivan, or that "Friends Forever" sounds like it was written by the composers of Grease, we are stating an opinion, not a fact. Now, I happen to agree with those interpretations. But, on the other hand, I tend to think that the Janitor's solo sounds nothing like Javert's "Stars," nor do I in fact agree that "When the Truth Comes Out" sounds anything like "Do You Hear the People Sing?", and I don't think that "For the Last Time, I'm Dominican" tango sounds like any West Side Story number, either.
Now, don't take offense at that — it's just that our opinions differ. But it's our opinions that are differing here, that's the key word to pay attention to — the fact that we disagree on this shows that these are interpretations and opinions, not facts. Wikipedia articles aren't meant for that sort of subjectivity, and the WP:NOR policy backs that up.
My initial write-up of the episode included the Grease reference, and when I rewrote the write-up after watching the episode again, I incorporated someone else's mention of the Gilbert & Sullivan reference. You are right that those are opinions and interpretations, too, even though I was the one to add them; they don't belong in there, and I took them out.
However, if there exist quotes from the people who actually wrote the songs (Fordham, Perry, Marx, etc.) stating that such-and-such-a-song was influenced by such-and-such-a-song, then it does indeed become an includeable, referenced fact, and it would have a place in the article. — Whedonette (ping) 19:44, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With Bill Lawrence confirming that one of the songs is from Grease, I think it's easily fair to now say that "Friends Forever" is derived from "We Go Together". Specifically: the use of nonsense words has become medical terms as the music drops out, the choreography of the nurses is similar (or the same in some cases) to styles in the musical, and the overall theme/style are much the same. There may not be a quotable confirmation, but of all the songs in the episode, it is the one that most closely matches a song in Grease/Les Mis/Rent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.245.86.135 (talk • contribs) 21:05, January 24, 2007
I've listened to the show's podcast featuring writer Deb Fordham, in which she states a great deal of information about her musical influences while writing the episode, as well as a lot of interesting production notes. I've also read the Time Out article. Now that we've got quotations directly from the songs' creators, we can include them because they're no longer opinion, they're referenced fact — we couldn't include them when they were only our own interpretations of the songs' influences. So, I did a pretty big rewrite that incorporates the podcast material, the Time Out article, and existing production notes, and then organizes them by musical number. Lyrics[edit]

Just to reiterate, lyrics should not be posted to the article itself. This is not a matter of my opinion; it's Wikipedia policy. Since NBC or the songwriters own the lyrics to those songs, posting them is a copyright violation, and admins are very strict about copyvios on Wikipedia. Additionally, others have already very thoroughly transcribed the lyrics and put it on the web, and those people have been linked to in the external links section of the article. Nonsensical inference[edit]

The Production Notes section states: “In a January 2007 interview with TV Guide, show creator Bill Lawrence indicated that they had no plans for a musical prior to the show's medical advisor, Dr. Jonathan Doris, finding a medical case where an individual with an aneurysm was hearing everything in music.” What the article actually states is that they “ wouldn't have done [a musical]”, which is not the same at all. In another itnerview I read, Lawrence said they had decided not to do a musical because there was no obvious way to make it make sense within the story. This neatly resolves the alleged contradictions. I’m not up to rewriting the section at the moment, though. -Ahruman 16:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-Singing Sentances[edit]

I added that Turk and J.D. could be heard in non-singing speak in the episode under trivia. Anyone agree?

Dentist Reference[edit]

I put that Dr. Cox inhaling oxygen before ranting to J.D. was most likely a reference to "The Dentist" from Little Shop of Horrors and it got taken out. Anyone agree?

Hey all,

So, as you might notice, I've made some changes to this article. A couple weeks ago, I suggested that we might be able to get some of the Scrubs articles up to GA status. So I began toying with this article. Now, I feel I've made almost all the changes I wanted to make, so I'm posting my changes. Basically, the changes are expanding, rewording, reorganising, and citation. Many of the changes were based on Wikiproject Television's guidelines, and based on information culled from a whole bunch of sources about the episode. So, I'm going to leave the article for a few days, so anyone who wants can make any changes that need doing, then I think I'm going to put the article up for Peer review, then maybe GA nomination... This can get to FA once the number of brackets is cut, particularly in the intro, the reception is neutralised more, the images are given article-specific rationales and better captions; Also, the "Gonna Miss You, Carla" subsec and the Plot's start need expansion, since an FA must be fully informative. Yeah, it is a bit odd to have subsections for all of the songs but two. But really, I'm not sure what could be put in about those two songs. They're probably 30 seconds long combined, and I'm not aware of any production details that could be added about them. Songs and Dialog Sped up in Comedy Central re air[edit]

they just started airing this season on Comedy Central in America and the songs and dialog have been sped up. I think this is because they usually cut a little bit for differences in time but they couldnt on this episode. I only noticed it cause I had ripped the songs to mp3 from the show for myself and listened to them a lot then compared the episode of i had on my PC from NBC to the Comedy Central one and its almost double tempos on some songs 68.226.125.194 05:34, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
