St. Marys Historic District[edit]

The listing says "Roughly bounded by Walburga, St. Michael, Fourth, John, and Mill Streets". Of those, only St. Michael and Mill Streets intersect. The submission has not yet been digitized on the NPS web site. Any way to find out more accurately what the borders of the district are? Powers T 19:18, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the Pennsylvania submissions are available via their CRGIS system. That for the St. Marys Historic District may be found here. In this case, I think you can't go too far wrong by using the geocode coords for St. Marys itself. The current coords (which I'm guessing are from the NRIS database) seem fine also. Other pretty good resources for coming up with geocode coords: Google Earth layers available from the NPS and http://www(dot)gelib(dot)com/tag/national-register-of-historic-places (Google Earth Library which is apparently black-listed by WP).--sanfranman59 (talk) 20:11, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's not the center coordinates I'm interested in so much as the boundaries, since we need a representative picture of the district. I see the submission has a longer list of streets; I'll take a look and see if they better define an area. Powers T 22:11, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you have trouble finding any Elk County nomination forms, you can contact Niagara. Pennsylvania changed the hosting for its National Register website in mid-December; in case they failed to upload a significant number of them, several of us teamed up to download all 3,000+ forms from their old server, and Niagara downloaded all of the forms for Elk County. If you ever want any other forms and can't find them with the CRGIS, consult User:Nyttend/Pennsylvania forms. Nyttend (talk) 23:16, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
@LtPowers ... You may already be aware of this, but in case you aren't, you shouldn't necessarily expect historic district boundaries to form a nice closed geometric shape. I've seen districts that include a few properties on one street, a few more on another street several blocks away and then a few more that might even be in a completely different part of town (for example, buildings might have been moved from where they were originally located). Furthermore, even when boundaries do form a nice geometric pattern, not every building within that pattern will be a contributing property to the historic district. The only way to be certain that a property is contributory to the district is to check the registration form. --sanfranman59 (talk) 23:55, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's why "roughly" is in there :-) Consider the Beaver Historic District in Beaver, Pennsylvania — it's described as being "Roughly bounded by the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad tracks, Fair Avenue, 5th Street, 3rd Street, and Sassafras Lane", but its actual boundaries are shown on the map to the right. Niagara gave me the links you want: see the last page of its nomination form, available at the old site or the new site. The map isn't as good as the one for the Beaver Historic District (here), but it's better than nothing; and the boundary description should be sufficiently detailed as well.
