Contradiction[edit]

This article contradicts the article on the Padaung. That article expresses many of the ideas of this article as legends. A knowledgeable person should compare and repair.

particularly this uncited section: "In some earlier african cultures neck rings were worn to signify a man's power over women.Women were forced to wear the neck rings their whole lives, resulting in atrophy of the neck muscles. When the man got tired of his wife, he could remove these rings- making the woman's neck snap; consequential death.[citation needed]" <-- the padaung article specifically disproves this assertion.

Removed Phrase[edit]

I removed the phrase "This poses a health concern as a person who has worn neck rings for a long time cannot support the weight of their head without neck rings." as I doubt its accuracy. The article on the Kayan people states that this is "nonsense", and gives examples of accounts of when the rings are removed. Mouse Nightshirt 12:30, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But the Kayan article does not cite any references so how can you trust its accuracy? I found this information from a page which is listed in the links. A couple webpages also mentioned that the windpipe can be crushed if the neck rings are removed after years but I did not include that information. --Xasi131 05:59, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infidelity[edit]

I heard somewere that if a woman of one of those tribes were to break here vows of marrage, she would have the rings removed from here neck, which would cause her to die because the musals in her neck could'nt hold their head up. Is there any truth is these accusations? 69.250.130.215 23:12, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Who knows, but there is truth to my 'accusations' that you can't spell.. ;-) In any case, without a reference, that sort of information is not welcome on the article. It sounds unlikely. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 11:20, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not unlikely. I read the same thing in a reputable publication. Succubus MacAstaroth (talk) 05:55, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's a myth, watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL8ARB5FmsA . They can take it off without any problems. Dionyseus (talk) 07:13, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any other reasons as to why these people wear neck rings?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that they also wear them to protect their neck from lions because they are known to target the neck area when hunting.

That is a misunderstanding. The Long-Neck Karen, use amulets against worries, because that tribe specially take care of children, because Karen have only one live and do not been reborn like Buddhists. One night a mother dream as a tiger kill her daughter. That was a very realistic fear, because they living in a forest full of tigers. The mother go to the medicine man for a protection against tigers to the daughter's amulet sachet. But he give that advice as give her daughter the brass collar soon, and not wait for her first menstruation. Because a tiger kill deer by a bite in the neck.
And because all mothers be afraid of tigers. The brass collars been a tradition for all small Long-Neck Karen girls. Several other tribes have brass collars, but only in the upper-class family and first after the first menstruation.Haabet 12:04, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

The rings aren't going to be any protection from tigers; most blows or bites from a tiger would break any persons' neck. 98.246.183.207 (talk) 17:00, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

discarding neck rings[edit]

Some women in Northern Thailand are discarding their neck rings due to issues with the Thai authorities. Padaung Women are Discarding their Neck Rings. The Irrawaddy. (October 2008)

That are normalcy. The use of neck rings voluntary. Often have the girls a break between at age of 6 and 10 years old. Before 6 years old the mother is the big model; and after 10 years old the boys attention been important. Before October 2008 the tourist do not see the girls without neck rings, and the tourists do not belief as that is voluntary. But in October 2008 some of the girls without neck rings been seen of the tourists for convince of the voluntary.

All girls of the world like to been love for their personality and character. And in animism your soul is extremely old and immortal, as personality and character are all and the body is nothing. In a normal Matriarchy, the society been tyrannically of the old mother, the matriarch, and all members are her slaves. But if matriarchy have extreme animism. All women is very old, and a matriarch have need of a popular assembly and democracy in all decisions.

In a normal society, is physical strength is important, but in a female-dominated society the physical strength have low status, because men is stronger than women, and mental strength have hight status. In a female-dominated society it is important as marry the men as they been connected to the female-dominated society. But the only thing a girl (in a female-dominated society) can give to a man is virtuousness. And woman is more virtuousness the younger she is. But girl in the ages of 12-13 years old do not have a full-grown personality and character.

How can a girl in ages of 12-13 years show her personality and character?! The answer is only a artificial long neck can show a girl's staying power and mental strength. Haabet 08:00, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

"illusion of elongation" section[edit]

This section appears to be poorly cited. The lack of citations lead me to think it wasn't worth reading. Can anyone provide any citations? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.252.124.176 (talk) 03:46, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
