I believe France and Spain also had claims on the Oregon Territory. Also how were other claims reconciled with annexation?

As the article says, see Oregon Country for the history of the unorganized territory. olderwiser 00:57, July 23, 2005 (UTC)

Most of the state of washington was originally part of British Columbia until annexed by the US.

question

posting a question here an anon wrote on the talk page of Image:USA Territorial Growth 1810.jpg --Astrokey44 04:59, 14 July 2006 (UTC): "If the date of this map is correct [1810], why is Oregon territory included? When did the US claim the area? I thought this occured in 1825 with a Treaty with Russia."

question 2

in the article it states "On February 14, 1859, the territory entered the Union as the U.S. state of Oregon within its current boundaries. The remaining eastern portion of the territory (the portions in present-day southern Idaho and western Wyoming) was added to the Washington Territory.

In 1861 and then 1863, portions to the east were organized into the Nebraska Territory and Idaho Territory (respectively.)"

so the question is where does nebraska come into play???

If you look at the maps below that section, you will see that a small portion of the Washington Territory that is now part of the state of Wyoming was split off into the Nebraska Territory (see that page also for a nice map). So the state of Nebraska does not come into play, only the territory, which like many US territories, the boundaries between what was the territory and what became the state do not match. Hopefully this helps. Aboutmovies (talk) 10:31, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
