Rewrite[edit]

It's clear this article needs nothing less, as it's laden with POV statements and masses of conjecture. Hushpuckena (talk) 22:50, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Elephants[edit]

A big omission from this article is the team's nickname, the "Elephants". Here's an article from PhillySportsHistory.com that describes the history of the term and is accompanied by a photo of "Chief" Bender with an elephant on his uniform. I found the coverage in the Philadelphia Inquirer of the As epic seventeen-inning tie against the Tigers (at the climax of a pennant race) on 30 September 1907; it is accompanied by a cartoon that embodies the Detroit team as a tiger and the As as an elephant.
