Pickup men are used for buckjumping or bronc riding. Clowns, chute hands, boss etc are in the arena/ring during bull riding. As far as I know bull riders do not have pickup men anywhere, although a horseman is sometimes present to remove a bull, after the ride. The American bull riding that I have seen did not use pickup men. Normally, experienced bulls generally head for the gate to the back of the chutes, but of course there always exceptions to this.Cgoodwin (talk) 06:49, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're right that the pickup riders don't usually get next to the riders on the bulls, that's a good point, I guess I better tweak that bit. However, over here, there are mounted riders in the ring during bull riding, and it's usually the same pickup guys. See examples:[1], (a blacklist article ezinearticles.com/?Rodeo-Pick-Up-Riders---Ghosts-of-the-Arena!&id=3755903, and [2]. We yanks seem to have a "how many people can we cram into the arena with the bull?" attitude, I guess. On an unrelated whine, we also are turning at least the PRCA and PBR stuff into a circus -- the barrelman is in the ring all the time, usually trying to use the announcer as his straight man for a comedy act instead of helping the clowns (bullfighters) help the rider, the announcer is IN the ring, usually on a horse, and with a wireless mic, then on top of that you have the blaring rock music for every ride...it's like they have lost all faith in the attention span of the audience.
