Deletion / Merge Discussion

[edit]

Trying to pre-empt speedy deletion. Pirate Party of Oklahoma is the 1st official state party of the United States Pirate Party and has been covered by the local news media in Oklahoma. If it does meet criteria for speedy deletion please userfy the page for me. Thanks Okpirates (talk) 08:41, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reply: The above may or may not be true (the article does not confirm official status, but only says the party is "in the process of gathering signatures to gain recognized party status"). Even if true, IMO it does not qualify this state branch of the party for a separate article. This information should be merged into United States Pirate Party as per the guidelines at WP:CLUB: "Individual chapters, divisions, departments, and other sub-units of notable organizations are only rarely notable enough to warrant a separate article. Information on chapters and affiliates should normally be merged into the article about the parent organization." Most of this information duplicates what is at United States Pirate Party in any case. I will go ahead and perform this merge/redirect if no objections are raised within a week. If someone objects, I will nominate it for merging via the WP:AFD process. --MelanieN (talk) 14:47, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually as per US Politics, there is no such thing as a "National Party" there are only state parties, and each state party runs its own organization separately. This is why each national election there are certain states that are excluded from the national count for the dems or the republicans because the national committee takes issue with how one of the state parties is run. How it should be is the United States Pirate Party National Committee, and then a very separate Pirate Party of Oklahoma both operating independently under a loose conglomeration with other pirate parties within the United States. To merge PPOK and USPP would be like to merge IHOP and Denny's into one article because they are both corporations that do breakfast. I know that PPOK and USPP sounds similar in name, but in practice they are very different.  Travis "TeamColtra" McCrea - (T)(C) 11:06, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Then let's talk about the other issue: whether the Oklahoma chapter is an "official" party in the state of Oklahoma, or just a wannabe party. I just did a search of Google and Google News, and I could not find any evidence that the party qualified as an official party in Oklahoma. Thus, your claim back in August that it is the "first official state party of the United States Pirate Party" does not appear to be accurate; "official" in whose eyes? Did their signature drive have any results? I don't want to be heavy-handed here, but it seems to me that the United States Pirate Party article is enough Wikipedia coverage for this tiny would-be party and that none of the state parties have reached the point of inclusion. Since you have objected, I will not merge or redirect this article on my own. I will probably nominate it for deletion so that there can be a proper Wikipedia-wide discussion. --MelanieN (talk) 15:43, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In the absence of any further evidence of notability or viability for this state party, I am going to request that this article to be redirected to United States Pirate Party. --MelanieN (talk) 22:54, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
