This story would make a great film. Of course, it would need fictitious events happening in those three years of isolation. I read somewhere that Cavendish also found a hanged man in the plaza gallows.--200.14.108.1 20:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Geographical centre?[edit]

The statement that P.H. is considered the geographical centre of Chile seems to me highly suspect. I have edited it out. Godingo (talk) 21:16, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually that statement is correct. Close by there is an obelisk that markes the extact mid point between the northern limit of Chile (close to Arica) and the South Pole, and it has a sign that says so. As you know, Chile claims sovereignty on an area of Antarctica that reaches the South Pole. Thus, this obelisk is correct in stating it is the geographical centre of Chile.--200.14.108.1 (talk) 17:25, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
The sign is pictured at [1] (image at [2]) – this image at Flickr shows the "obelisk" itself.
Text of the sign in Spanish: Hito que indica que desde este punto geográfico hasta el límite con el Perú por el norte y el Polo Sur por extremo austral dista la misma cantidad de kms.
Translation: Landmark indicating that from this geographic location the distance to the border with Peru in the north and to the South Pole in the south is the same number of kilometers.
Whether the obelisk is "correct" obviously depends on one's POV; the sign itself makes a more neutral statement. However, I think the marker and the claim are worth mentioning in the article. I've added this, but not the old one-sided text removed by Godingo.
