Wasn't she in Spike Lee's movie Jungle Fever? She played the role of a waitress and wore a dasheke (sp).

I heard rumours (I could be wrong) that she will not be acting in the sequel to bringing down the house (scheduled for 2007)

According to the article on German Wikipedia, Queen Latifah was the very first hip-hop artist to have a star on the Walk of Fame. If this is true, then it's not relevant if she's the first female hip-hop star. Gilliamjf 09:54, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Shall I put this tag on top of the article? I think it is quite obvious this article isn't that great when it comes to citing sources, so maybe I should put one of those tags on the article. I've just done a little cleaning of the article. There was a fair bit of poor grammar, some unclear statements, and some vandalism that I've tried to repair. The article looks clean to me now, but I agree that it could be much better cited. This article does not mention anything about her role in the film "New Jack City" this fil came out in about 1990 and she sung the song "For the Love of Money" with Levert and Troup. In my opinion one of the best sountracks for a gangster movie ever. Those who have awarded this artist, or nominated her for awards, for her achievements in the field seem to feel differently and I would say that this qualifies the artist as noteable, and worthy of an article on Wikipedia. Women of colour?

"Of color" is inclusive of more ethnicities than those of African descent. Latinas, Native Americans, Indians (as in Asia) etc. are all "women of color", who might find cosmetics developed for caucasian complexions less than satisfactory. Let it stand as written. I would have to say "people of color" is the most preferable term currently in use. It's a over-encompassing term referring to non-Caucasians, which many may find less offensive than "browns and blacks" or any other abbreviated form of saying "People of Middle-Eastern, African, Asian, Native-American, Pacific-Island, or Aboriginal descent." Also, I have no source for this, but I feel like brands for darker skin tones use euphemisms like "People of Color," or "Those with darker skin." I personally feel like this may be just a situation of over-sensitivity, because just by the simple act of identifying humans by skin color, no matter how benign the intentions, such as for cosmetics, is inherently racism; racism being the identification or classification of race based on skin color, whether inducing hate or identifying skin products. I think it's important that we not speculate on someone's very private life. There is no evidence that she is part of the homosexual lifestyle and in fact many have used that slur in order to undermine her work. Hairspray

The summer of 2007 brought Latifah triple success in the big-screen version of the Broadway smash hit Hairspray, in which she acted, sang, and danced. The film rated highly with critics. It starred, among others, John Travolta (Grease), Michelle Pfeiffer (Stardust), Allison Janney (Juno), James Marsden (Enchanted) and Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can).

I doubt any of these people need extra credits by their name to indicate who they are (and the decisions made to illustrate a film associated with them is... bizarre). Anyone who desires to know who the actor is can simply click on their names. 12.162.122.6 (talk) 19:13, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Better Picture

Why in the HELL is there a picture of Queen Latifah with aviators on covering her half her face, when someone not knowing who she is clicks on her name from some movie she acted in and can't see her? For someone as famous as Latifah, they need a better picture so someone who isn't quite familiar with her can hopefully recognize her upon visiting this page. Is it relevant how many of her movie apparances were in remakes,sequels, based on books, etc? This is not usually listed for actors. I'm simply puzzled by the listing of "queen of Egypt" under occupations. It seems to have been around for quite some time. Queen Latifah's mother's maiden name...

Since her mother's death made the news I noticed the obituaries conflict with what this article states.

Wonder if this should be mentioned in the article somewhere. I’m not sure (it’s mentioned in Parton’s article, but then it’s a much more well-known aspect of Parton’s public image than Latifah’s). As the article Nicki Minaj has added the sentence "[She] has been referred to as the 'Queen of Rap'" to its lead section, I was reading some of the reasoning on Bieber's 'Prince of Pop' discussion, and there's a point on these mentioned nicknames not being exclusive, not essential to just one person, and actually being passed around. And newer artists have already started to get the nickname within the press.

Aside from the mentioned, there's two other articles that have the nickname "Queen of Rap" on their lead sections:

Seeking uniformity and integration in Wikipedia, I'm proposing their lead (of the three) go from

  • [Name] has been referred to as "the Queen of Rap" by several media outlets

to

  • [Name] is among the women that have been cited as the "Queen of Rap" by multiple media outlets.

In theory, there shouldn't be anything wrong with citing other women as the "Queen of XYZ" provided that there is evidence that reliable secondary source use the source frequently and consistently. However, in none of these articles that you've cited, it is shown that they are called the Queen of Rap/Queen of Hip Hop consistently.
In Latifah's case, majority of the sources are all from the 90s, and she hasn't been called Queen of Rap or Queen of Hip Hop since then in any major articles. Same for Missy, after removing the unreliable sources, both articles that call her the "Queen of Rap" are from 2003. The singular English source that calls Lil Kim the Queen of Rap was in 2005. All of these sources are before Minaj even started in the music industry, so why would the title still be in their lead all these years later?
