Mariano Bonilla[edit]

California State Archives at the University of Berkeley reference the following; Bonilla first lost holdings of his rancho through the US courts to the Bixby Land Corporation in 1852, who later settled Long Beach, CA., Then in another US court ruling in 1862 Bonilla lost the remaining rancho land to George Hurst, the silver and copper tycoon who was the father of William Randolph Hurst. Mariano Bonilla, educated at the Nacional College in Mexico City, was the first lawyer arriving in Alta California in 1834 with the H&P Colony. His wife, Delores Garcia, was a direct decendent of Francisco Salvador Lugo, who was among the first Spaniards to come to the California Territory in 1769 with the Gaspar 'de Portola expedition. Mariano held several American positions including,; Teacher, Justice of the peace, County Supervisor and Districr Attorney in both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties after the American take-over of California following the American agression of 1846.
