Alive?[edit]

Are you sure this guy is still alive? I haven't heard his name mentioned for some years, which is very odd considering the extent of his crimes and the ongoing tribunal. One would expect some sort of witchhunt to be still in operation. 86.42.90.145 (talk) 00:45, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, he is alive. He has been convicted and served his sentence from matters arising about the tribunal, an interim report was issued. Keeping his head down, I suppose

Flood report[edit]

From the Flood report, [1]:

  • The Tribunal is satisfied that Mr. Barry’s reluctance to provide documentary evidence of this payment stems from the fact that he was aware that the payment was a corrupt payment for which Mr. Burke would not issue any formal acknowledgement or receipt.
  • The Tribunal is satisfied that Mr. Stafford had, at all times since the payment was made public, endeavoured to distance himself from any association with the payment made by Mr. Barry to Mr. Burke and that the reason for so doing is that he knew that the payment to Mr. Burke was a corrupt payment.
  • In all the circumstances the Tribunal concludes that the payment made to Mr. Burke was a corrupt payment.
  • In the opinion of the Tribunal the transfer of Briargate to Mr. Burke amounted to a corrupt payment to him from Mr. Tom Brennan and his associates.
  • The payment of stg. £35,000 to the account of Caviar Limited at Hill Samuel & Company (Jersey) Limited per Allied Irish Bank on the 19th of April 1984 was a corrupt payment to Mr. Burke probably made by Mr. Tom Brennan and his associates.
  • The payment of stg. £60,000 to the account of Caviar Limited by Canio Limited on the 21st of November 1984 was a corrupt payment to Mr. Burke...
  • The payment of £35,000 to Mr. Burke by Mr. Barry on the 26th May 1989 was a corrupt payment made in response to a demand for £30,000 cash by Mr. Burke, and was not intended by Mr. Barry to be a political donation to Mr. Burke or to Fianna Fáil.

Pension value[edit]

I dont want to edit war over this, but the line about Burke's pension's value is inappropriate. Articles can usefully have information about a someone's personal income for some appropriate year (the most recent year, say, or the year they were at the peak of their fame and fortune) or about their net worth; but information about the actuarial present value of their pension is too obscure to be useful, and is likely to mislead or confuse many readers. The source newspaper article seems to be making two points:

  1. it is a scandal that politicians' pension provisions are so generous
  2. it is a scandal that disgraced politicians get to keep their pensions

Using the actuarial present value is a nice way for a journalist to make those points; "$3m" is obviously more sensational than "$103k per year" simply because the number is bigger. But point #1 belongs, if anywhere, in a "Remuneration" section of Government of Ireland, not in a bio article about a particular minister. And point #2, if made at all, should be made directly (e.g. "After his disgrace, there were calls for Burke to [turn down / be stripped of] his ministerial pension") rather than by insinuation. jnestorius(talk) 15:55, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
