Much that disambiguation is messy, I propose that it may be a good idea. Although this article currently concerns food, there are several other meanings for recipe that I feel the current focus is inhibiting.

  • Numerical recipes
  • Computer-hardware and silicon
  • Chemical/hermetic
  • Potions(magic)

I would tend to agree. Has anyone thought of making a recipe Wiki? Would that make sense, or is there something similar for adding entries to a sort of database? It would be awesome if you could then search by ingredients or time, etc. gujamin 13:28, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
There's a recipe search engine at . I had been intending to build one myself but this one looks pretty good. There's a recipe Wiki that's part of Wikipedia here and some of the external links in this article have recipe Wikis. SilverFox 21:32, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Lots of external links - what to do with them?[edit]

The article has a lot of external links and more are added. One option to deal with this is to delete all these links and make it hard to add new ones (like it was done in Real estate). What are opinions of others? Pavel Vozenilek 20:43, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Categorize with subheaders. There's not enough here now to be any problem. Delete dubious ones. Keep good ones. Sure, that's somewhat subjective, but a good revert war once in a while is a good thing. Gene Nygaard 22:40, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
There are a lot of external links now. I had a quick look at the most recently added ones and people are adding them at the top or in the middle. Surely it would be more polite to add new links to the bottom?! SilverFox 09:59, 14 October 2005 (UTC) of those people was me. I agree that categories would be a big help. gujamin 13:28, 3 November 2005 (UTC)
Not sure if this is the place to put external links at all. If people want to look for recipes they can use google.
I disagree vehemently with the last post -- Google is very lousy for recipe search, and there are lots of niche search engines that do much better. —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 14:15, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Recipe Wiki[edit]

I am the sole administrator for this Recipe Wiki Site: Anyone interested in helping admin the wiki, let me know. My username is Wikimanager there. We have thousands of recipes already, but the site needs some volunteers and community help. Cosmicfly 19:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC):

How does the Cookbook Wiki deal with copyrighted recipes? I just realized today that recipes can be and are copyrighted, so curious as to how different a recipe has to be from the copyrighted version to be legal.

MSTCrow 02:45, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Recipes are not copyrighted and cannot be copyrighted (at least under U.S. copyright; some more details below by an anonymous user). Hulten (talk) 15:32, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

The actual ingredients and steps needed to make a recipe are not able to be copyrighted. The descriptive language can be copyrighted, so all the flourishes of the author have to be stripped out before we can include it. Hope this helps.

How about some recipe history - what is the earliest know history of a recipe? How did recipe's get bandied about historically? How about proprietary recipe's, like KFC's chicken seasoning? bd2412 T 05:51, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

To add link[edit]

Please excuse the bad quality of my English... I placed "Gourmet library and museum" as link because the Library contains more than 300 000 recipes en that can be interesting for saerchers, isn't it ?... I therefore place it again. If you don't agree, please, contact me. --Égoïté (talk) 14:58, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Veggie link[edit]

Everyone, the link may be ok; check it out. I first removed it because it had been removed as spam on another article. See my talk page for his justification. Carl.bunderson (talk) 04:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Linking to one of thousands of recipe websites from a general article like this (and Restaurant) is spamming. It's not a website about "what a recipe is", it's just another site with recipes on it. I'm staying out of this from here on in, but this is not an appropriate link. - Special-T (talk) 04:48, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I saw your comment on his talk page after posting that, and you are right. I've been in the same situation before with specificity of links, and I just hadn't been thinking about this one from that standpoint. So I wouldn't say there is reason for you to stay out of it; I'll continue removing it now. Carl.bunderson (talk) 04:49, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
So what's the final verdict? I guess the link I provided is too general for this topic? I just don't see how you can judge which links stay or go... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gtg228r (talkcontribs) 05:30, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Well my 2¢ is that it's not ok here, but is on something such as Vegetarian cuisine. See WP:EL for more on guidelines about what to, and not to, link. Carl.bunderson (talk) 05:40, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Definitely wouldn't think it would be suited here, good idea about Vegetarian cuisine. Wexcan  Talk  05:44, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for your help! appreciate it Gtg228r (talk) 05:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

External links[edit]

I'm removing nearly all of the external links, since they are merely links to websites providing lots of recipes. 1- There are (tens of?) thousands of such sites, and listing a few here in a general encyclopedia article is arbitrary; 2- A Google search for the word recipe would turn up pages of listings like this. Links here don't add to the article; 3- These are not sites with information about recipes, they're just recipes. If there's a good reason to restore any of these, go ahead, but it seems pretty clear that these are not good external links that add value to an encyclopedia article. - Special-T (talk) 17:23, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

I've removed the new link to a "recipie Wikia" page as I feel it's solely to promote the Wikia or, at the very least, doesn't add much to the page itself. -Corestrike (talk) 07:29, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Enunciation advice[edit]

"Ress-i-pee"? That's a bit too amateurish, why not use proper symbols? —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 22:55, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

I've removed the pronunciation. Carl.bunderson (talk) 21:37, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Recipes in Ancient Egypt[edit]

Phrase: "There are ancient Egyptians hieroglyphics depicting the preparation of food" refered to Encyclopedia of Food and Culture, vol. 1, p. 558. But at this page is no mention about this, only: "Records from China and Egypt show that fowl were domesticated and laying eggs for human consumption around 1400 B.C.E.".
