Trappist the monk, The GBIF site wants the citations to read: "Rhododendron subulatum (Nakai) Harmaja in GBIF Secretariat (2016). GBIF Backbone Taxonomy. Checklist Dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/39omei accessed via GBIF.org on 2017-09-23." I was trying to comply.User-duck (talk) 04:36, 23 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

GBIF offer a citation so that anyone citing a page at GBIF can simply copy/paste it into another document, fiddle with formatting, and Bob's yer uncle. Their suggested format is not a requirement; and even if it were, what can they do to us if we do not comply?
For cs1|2
  • |via= is used to hold the name of a source provider other than the publisher so was misused here
  • GBIF do not name authors for these pages so we should not contrive a name simply to 'fill in the blanks'
  • clearly the GBIF database is not a book so should not be cited as such
  • the value assigned to |doi= is not unique; it does not take the reader to the particular page where the data that supports the Wikipedia article's text can be found, so for readers, doi is mostly useless
