Do you read?

Apparently not or you have the same bad habits[1] of so many other editors around here. Where in the IC here, does it say 'Southern California', 'several', or 'tournament chess player'? The answer to my question is obvious when you put this bullshit back into an article. Another problem, the USCF doesn't have a Roger W Bowen in its rating database[[2]], just a Roger S Bowen. I'm in the database, and my last over the board tournament game was 1985. Also, Official chess tournaments are recognized by the USCF and their games rated. The IC says he was a chess expert, then he'd be rated if THAT INFO was correct. Read WP:TRIVIA too....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 16:30, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I overlooked California, so shoot me or just remove Cali. It says "An expert chess player, Bowen played in tournaments in the 1970s, and also wrote a number of comedic novels in the 1970s and into the 1990s." If he were an avid painter, or avid basketball player, or avid anything else, would you remove that from his article as trivia? The use of tournament does not have to imply the standard of it being part of USCF. That assertion was not made. This is about characteristics of the subject. For example, in this discussion about his troupe at The Compass, it says "As a backstage diversion at the Compass, chess was constantly played". If its not properly referenced, yes. Playing chess on the set, is not uncommon[3]. John Wayne played chess including sometimes between shooting scenes on a movie set. Peter Falk played the game, Humphrey Bogart would play a game. The IC says called Bowen expert chessplayer. Expert is a rating level. Expert would also say he is more than a casual chess player like all the other celebrities I mention. A expert would be rated by the USCF or the IC is an exaggeration it shouldn't be in the article because it isn't reliably sourced....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 17:34, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Chess Strength[edit]

Bowen was unlikely to have been an "Expert" -- this is the category below master, an Elo rating of 2000 to 2199. In the mid 1970s, when he was in his mid 40s, he was 1400 or so and while there has been rating inflation, it is pretty unlikely he went up 600 points at that age. Not impossible, but more likely is some writer who is unaware of the rating system found out he played in tournaments and threw in the word "expert" without knowledge of its actual meaning. 50.230.251.244 (talk) 22:56, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
