This page should be at Diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay, but I don't want to fix the redirects. Srnec (talk) 06:02, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed flag of French Republic per WP: ICON

[edit]

I removed the French Republic flag (of 1946) icon from the Infobox, in accordance with several sections of WP:ICON; specifically (quoting),

  • Generally, flag icons should not be used in infoboxes, even when there is a "country", "nationality" or equivalent field: they are unnecessarily distracting and give undue prominence to one field among many....
  • Flags make simple, blunt statements about nationality, while words can express the facts with more complexity.....
  • Do not rewrite history. Flags should not be used to misrepresent the nationality of a historical figure [including some bishops], event, object, etc. Political boundaries change, often over the span of a biographical article subject's lifetime. Where ambiguity or confusion could result, it is better not to use a flag at all, and where one is genuinely needed, use the historically accurate flag.

Objection to paragraph

[edit]

I object to the inclusion of the following paragraph, and propose its deletion:

"Honoured with such prerogatives, the Church of Le Puy assumed a sort of primacy in respect to most of the Churches of France, and even of Christendom. This primacy manifested itself practically in a right to beg, established with the authorization of the Holy See, in virtue of which the chapter of Le Puy levied a veritable tax[weasel words] upon almost all the Christian countries to support its hospital of Notre-Dame.[citation needed]"

(1) The paragraph is unreferenced. (2) The paragraph reads like a promotional brochure. (3) The author of the paragraph does not understand the meaning of words, "the Church of Le Puy assumed a sort of primacy in respect to most of the Churches of France." "Primacy" means first-ness. and cannot exist along side of "in respect to most of." What is the force of "asssumed a sort of"? (4) Cathedral chapters have no canonical authority outside their diocese, or even inside the diocese, except as allowed or negotiated with the bishop, or what belongs to their prebends or benefices. What is suggested would require a papal bull. (5) There are no time paramaters for the assertions.
