POV[edit]

Some of the wording, esp. about minor nations is very POV. --HamedogTalk|@ 12:25, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grammatically, this article is a mess. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 211.225.164.137 (talkcontribs) 01:23, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

It has been months and there has been no development of the POV thread, as I do not think that anything said about the minor nations could be said to be anything other than a NPOV, I have removed the POV template. --Philip Baird Shearer 13:59, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just did a really big rewrite of th article (except for future). Will do more soon. Cvene64 15:56, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1928 request?[edit]

"In 1928 the IOC officially turned down a request to stage rugby union at the games in Amsterdam." -- is there a source for this? From the 1928 Official Report, I know that rugby has been _considered_ as a demonstration sport, but I don't think that is what is referred to here. Jeronimo 18:21, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are a few internet sites that wrote that, would they be appropriate? Cvene64 10:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes/future[edit]

Thanks very much for helping out with the article Jeronimo. I was wondering if you had anyother knowledge/info/anything on the requests from Italy/Soviet Union/Korea? Someone complained about the lack of detail of who/why/how it was not accepted, in addition who/why/how campaigned for it? Also, oe of your book references didnt work (the template at the bottom..). Also if you anymore advice/comments it would be very much appreciated. Thanks again. Cvene64 10:29, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a fair place to start from.GordyB 21:32, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Australasia[edit]

Mentioned in the peer review.

To the best of my knowledge 'Australasia' were represented by the Wallabies team, similar to how 'Great Britain' one year were in fact Moseley club team and on another occasion the Cornwall county team. This is why some sources say 'Australia' and others 'Australasia'.GordyB 20:22, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. The team "Australasia" was represented by the Australian national team, which played "Great Britain" - otherwise known as the Cornwall county team, which had just won the English championship. Moseley ("Great Britain"), Frankfurt ("Germany"), and France played in 1900. -- Jonel | Speak 23:16, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Automated suggestings from peer review[edit]

The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and may or may not be accurate for the article in question.

  • Per WP:MOSNUM, please spell out source units of measurements in text; for example, "the Moon is 380,000 kilometres (240,000 mi) from Earth.[1]
  • There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view. For example,
    • allege
    • it is claimed
    • might be weasel words, and should be provided with proper citations (if they already do, or are not weasel terms, please strike this comment).[2]
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that the it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 2a. [3]

GA Reassessment[edit]

This discussion is transcluded from Talk:Rugby union at the Summer Olympics/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the reassessment.

GA Sweeps: On hold[edit]

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing Sweeps to determine if the article should remain a Good article. I believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a GA. However, in reviewing the article, I have found there are several issues that need to be addressed.

  1. There are a few dead links that should be fixed. The Internet Archive may be able to help. -  Done
  2. Although it is not required by GA criteria (so it will not be a requirement for the review), it would be beneficial to add alt text to the images. See WP:ALT for assistance.
  3. The lead needs to be expanded to better summarize the article. See WP:LEAD for guidelines. -  Done Some expansion carried out let me know if it's not yet sufficient
  4. Throughout the article there are several one or two-sentence paragraphs. Either expand on these or incorporate them into another paragraph to improve the flow of the article.
  5. I don't think that File:Olympics postcard.jpg is necessary for including in the article since it's non-free and doesn't really show too much. It's current fair use rationale doesn't seem strong enough to warrant inclusion. Maybe consider using one or both of the images at Category:Rugby union at the Olympic Games. Done
  6. "Three National Olympic Committees (NOC) each entered a team at the 1900 games. They were France, Germany and Great Britain." This could probably be rewritten as one sentence. - Corrected  Done
  7. "Rules were also different from today's, with 3 points for both tries and penalties, 2 points for a conversion and 4 for a drop goal." For those unfamiliar with today's rules, actually compare the differences between modern rules. - Corrected  Done
  8. "Constantin Henriquez de Zubiera, a player on the French team, is the first known coloured athlete to compete in the Olympic Games." This could use a source. - Referenced  Done
  9. The last paragraphs in the "1908", "1920", "1924", and the "Subsequent games" sections are unsourced. Also address the "citation needed" tags, which have been tagged since last month. Cite any other statements that may be questioned by a reader. -  Done references added to paragraphs some unconfirmable material removed
  10. "Besides the individual host cities' requests, the IRB didn't focus its..." Contractions shouldn't be used in articles unless within quotes. Fix any other occurrences. - Corrected  Done

I will leave the article on hold for seven days, but if progress is being made and an extension is needed, one may be given. If no progress is made, the article may be delisted, which can then later be renominated at WP:GAN. I'll contact all of the main contributors and related WikiProjects so the workload can be shared. Once the above issues are addressed, I'll help do a final copyedit of the article. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 06:12, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good job addressing some of the issues. I have struck the completed ones above. Since some progress has been made, I'll leave the article on hold for another week. It would be great if progress could be made on the other tasks so the article could remain a GA. Again, if there are any questions, please let me know. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 20:29, 27 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've found the dead links on Internet archives but how should I go about using them as references? Can I treat them as I would any other online citation? Basement12 (T.C) 10:04, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In the citation template just place the Internet Archive url in place of the dead link. You can include Internet Archive as the publisher, but you should continue to cite the original website newspaper, author, date, etc. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:08, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GA Sweeps: Kept[edit]

Good work addressing the issues. I went through and made some minor changes, please review my edits. I believe the article currently meets the criteria and should remain listed as a Good Article. Continue to improve the article making sure all new information is properly sourced and neutral. It may be beneficial to update some of the older access dates for the citations. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I have updated the article history to reflect this review. --Happy editing! Rugby union/Rugby sevens[edit]

The 1900-1924 games articles about rugby are titled as "Rugby union at the 19XX Summer Olympics", while the 2016 article is titled Rugby sevens at the 2016 Summer Olympics. I assume it is "Rugby union sevens" which is played, and article named Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics also exists. Though that article is almost empty for now, it is consistent with the 2016 tournament article naming. 82.141.67.208 (talk) 18:10, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for his very useful Comment - I am now using the infomation ou have supplied here to provide links between these articles. Tlhslobus (talk) 22:17, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of this article[edit]

This article has a very confused scope. The hatnote (and the existence of the Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics article) seems to exclude Rugby Sevens from consideration, but the 2016 Olympics is included in the results table here. There is also inconsistency with the templates that are used; so I will post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rugby union. StAnselm (talk) 04:49, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
