2007 post[edit]

Does anyone know the reason we moved away from the single digit postcodes in this area? For example, SO3 became SO18. Dan Kerins 22:10, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

SO1?[edit]

The text says specifically that there is no "SO1" postal area, and yet the map clearly shows one between SO40, SO43 and SO51. Which is correct? Gavinatkinson (talk) 18:07, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The map is wrong. It also shows an SO3 postcode area around Winchester. Not sure why these postcodes are there as they do not exist (see table). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.208.113.58 (talk) 21:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

SO9?[edit]

I would hesitate to say that SO9 was NOT used for a time for new developments when codes within SO1 and SO2 ran out, but when I first lived in Southampton in 1980 SO9 was used as the first half of the codes for all 'large users' within the SO1 and SO2 areas, regardless of location. I was not aware of the SO9 code being used as a geographical code.Ntmr (talk) 20:18, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have revised the article to take account of what I know to be correct (though providing an adequate citation may be difficult). I strongly suspect that SO9 was used for large users in Southampton from the inception of postcodes, that this was their only use, and that they were never used as a geographical code for new developments.Ntmr (talk) 22:32, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A website http://www.doogal.co.uk/UKPostcodes.php?Search=SO9 suggests that SO9 was used for large users within the SO1 and SO2 areas (with one in Winchester!). I can see nothing there to suggest that they were also used for new developments. Unless someone can produce hard evidence to substantiate the assertion that SO9 was used for new developments when SO1 and SO2 codes ran out, I am proposing to amend the article.Ntmr (talk) 17:53, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have amended the article, having obtained verification that SO9 was used as long ago as 1970. The use of a special non-geographical 'first half' of a postcode for large users was unusual: was it in fact unique?Ntmr (talk) 16:41, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
