Dropping the F-Bomb at meeting with Tribune staff

The following is not slander

The passage that the IP editor keeps removing claiming it is slander is the following:

According to the New York-based Jewish daily, The Forward, the purchase of the Times has stirred debate over how Zell, who has a reputation for being a "committed Zionist", would influence the paper's coverage of Israel. One former Los Angeles Times political reporter, Ken Reich, assumes the paper's editorial policies will be shaped to "some degree." Reich said, "If he cares about the State of Israel, he won’t want his newspaper to be out there chipping away at Israeli interests."

I can not see how the above is slander as it accurately reports on a concern that some had in the media and in the broader community with regards to his purchase of the LA Times. The references are high quality (The Forward and the former political reporter for LA Times) and the passage above does not state conclusively that changes have occurred merely that some felt that there would be changes. Also, even if there were changes to the LA Times' coverage of Israel-related topics, this would not be illegal or unethical -- thus it is not slander to mention the possibility. Newspapers are allowed to cover world events and politics any way they see fit. They are not regulated by any laws that require equal coverage or multiple viewpoints -- for a case in point, see Fox News. --John Bahrain (talk) 05:14, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

While it might not meet the legal requirements of slander, it is still baseless speculation. Even "high quality" sources can be biased, and being pro-Israel, or insufficiently anti-Israel, is definitely a negative in certain quarters such as the Forward and the LA Times editor in question. Hypocritically, especially in light of their baseless accusation against Zell, is the fact that the Forward itself ousted a conservative editor at the behest of the Forward Foundation, a left non-profit [1].

I hardly think Wiki should allow anything so long as its not provably slanderous. For example, if a Wikipedia entry stated that sources speculated that Bob Smith was likely to start lying about his age, weight, and appearance in online dating without providing any evidence to support it, Bob Smith would be rightfully angry.

The paragraph in question is not only unfair to Zell, it's unfair to readers seeking honest, truthful, fact based information which is what Wikipedia is supposed to be providing.

JD in 1966?

It seems highly unlikely that he earned a JD in 1966 because LLBs were the norm until 1970, and if you ask Zell he almost certainly got a LLB which was later changed to a JD. Even if there are footnotes to support the JD in 1966, that probably means that source also failed to understand that, until 1970, almost all American law schools awarded LLBs. Political Contributions Section Remove?

I am not sure why the political contributions section is there. It seems to say, well, nothing. $100,000 in 13 years is not a lot, barely a fraction of one US Rep. campaign, especially for someone who donates tens of millions. Is this relevant to Sam Zell? In what way? Sure, some may argue that donations by the rich are always relevant. I don't see how that is so. Some wealthy people are politically active and it is a part of their public persona (see Soros, Bono) but Zell seems not to be. His political contributions are meaningless. This section adds nothing to his bio. It only seems to raise unjustifiably the visibility of and therefore the importance of political contributions. A few other billionaire articles that I checked didn't talk about political donations. I'll delete it. Removed Anti-Semitic "Ethnicity: Jewish" from heading box

There's an obvious anti-Semitic implication in the inclusion of "Ethnicity -- Jewish" in the heading box, as if to say, Sam Zell, Jew. This is a common ploy of anti-Semites on Wikipedia. You don't see "Louis Farrakhan -- Ethnicity: African American" or "Jack Welch -- Ethnicity: Caucasian," etc. The Jewish background in the article body is relevant to explain parent's emigration from Poland in 1939. There's nary a mention of his former activities in the media sector.
