Release date[edit]

Does anyone remember when the first beta version was released? --Mika1h (talk) 08:47, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to the news archive on the official website - http://si.planethalflife.gamespy.com/archive.php - the first public beta (called version 0.94) was released on July 31st, 1999. I added this information to the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.78.0.137 (talk) 15:02, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

TF2 ?[edit]

I think it is possible to mention the "possible" influence Sciences and Industry had on TF2.

- TF (Quake) was about 2 teams fighting each other with differents classes.

- TFC was nearly the same, but IMO maps and players models were more "Red VS Blue" than TF was.

- TF2 :

  • "cartoon" look, even with the weapons => like the original (unusual) weapons in S&I.
  • Red and Blue are now 2 firms, like AFD/MCL, so the players are supposed to be their employees.
  • Their names means RED (Reliable Excavation Demolition) and BLU (Builders League United), like the AFD (Amalgamated FluoroDynamics) and MCL (Midland Carbide Labs).
  • quoted from TF2 wiki article : "Both teams sport their own art style to help players navigate the levels". MCL is similar to BLU (clean, grey&blue "profesionnal") and AFD to RED (more "home-made"), S&I maps have often different art style between AFD and MCL.
  • the scoring system not only based on frags but mostly on teamplay : capturing and defending scientists or intel, destruction of super-computer, enemies' weapons salvaging.
  • others things like unlockable weapons or specific capacities (Scout's double-jump, Spy's invisibility-watch) are not exclusively S&I related, but IMO these things can be a potential influence of S&I on TF2.

Finally, I'm not saying at all "OMG THEY STOLE GOOD IDEAS FROM S&I !", I love TF2 (like S&I and TFC), I'm happy to see such great ideas are not "lost" forever (who is still playing S&I down here ? I feel alone...), because some developers played these games and loved some features, they keep the concept, the ideas alive, don't flame please ! :)

– yea, I though same thing too, relation TF2 to S&I. Would be cool if they release S&I on TF2 engine. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.25.192.113 (talk) 10:50, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ps : the first images of TF2 (military camo) look like the Front Line Force mod, especially like the screenshots of an unreleased version, while its creator Finol moved to VALVe Software in 2001... "Coincidence ? You decide !" syndrom :D

I agree, there appear to be similarities. But without any independent verification of the similarity, we can't really comment on it in the Wikipedia article. WP:V explains what would pass muster for this sort of claim. —/Mendaliv//Δ's/ 04:38, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed[edit]

It amazes me how someone spent more energy going "OH MY GOD CITATION NEEDED!!!" on every sentence than would be needed to CITE the darn things with a review. And things like "Players decide to either defend their company or attack the other company." are marked as citation needed. For Pete's sake, guys. --68.230.167.244 (talk) 21:45, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
