If Bernstein was born in Imperial Russia, should he be considered a Russian mathematician? --Nikolay Churkin 22:23, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

In fact, he was a Ukrainian jew. So he had Jewish nationality according to Soviet rules. In imperial Russia the Ukraine had not been considered as an independent part of the state. So it seems to be a little bit of a modern Ukrainian patriotism to name him "Ukrainian". I'll change it. Kgsteffens (talk) 11:16, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

He taught at Kharkov University at Kharkov in the Ukraine. The biography of Neyman discusses several anecdotes with Bernstein, who had trouble because of anti-semitism and because of honesty: for example, he asked a question "What is Marxist-Leninist mathematics?"!
