Problems with todo list

[edit]

1) Create section comparing the performance of top solar cars over the last 2 decades (as an example of how much the technology has improved)

OR

2) Describe economic impacts of solar car racing, especially on markets for solar cells, electric motors, and other specialized components

That sounds like an essay, OR again

3) Describe the education and experience gained by collegiate and high school teams, especially the numbers of students who have participated

That sounds like an essay, OR again

4) Keep technical detail while still remaining understandable to a non-engineering audience

Yes, that is a problem. I think one approach is to structure the article so the technical stuff is at the bottom. It might be an idea to work out a structure for the article and then fill the blanks in later. Greg Locock (talk) 23:12, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
After further consideration, I agree that number 1 above would likely be OR. However, I propose to present real sources for numbers 2 and 3 above. The data would be encyclopedic, not an essay or otherwise OR, if gathered from an authoritative source (the many books on solar car racing, for example). I'm not suggesting that a WP editor try to quantify this stuff himself.
Regarding number 4, I'd support moving the design section to the end of the article and discussing "notable distance races" at the beginning, perhaps with a different header.
I know that it's cheeky of me to just unilaterally create a to-do list, but it's also there for you to edit (as I have now done). Bry9000 (talk) 00:37, 29 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have reorganized the page to describe actual races first, then vehicle design, then strategy. Bry9000 (talk) 18:37, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Split

[edit]

This article was split from its original source at Solar vehicle. Bry9000 (talk) 05:43, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Raycing

[edit]

Raycing is a very ugly neologism of limited scope, please see [[1]], and tell me why you think it should be included. Greg Locock (talk) 19:56, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I oppose the use of the word raycing at all. It originally came from the GM Sunraycer in 1987; that company went on to name its US event the Sunrayce USA in order to make a connection between its race and its race vehicle. People involved in solar racing don't really use that spelling of the word. Let's delete it from the article. Bry9000 (talk) 06:13, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed rename

[edit]

They have always been called solar cars, in my (rather long) experience with them. Incidentally your rename proposal is badly formed please sort it out. Greg Locock (talk) 02:04, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Estimates needed

[edit]

There needs be a table showing variable estimates which can be used in the equations. You might want to include in this table the estimates for a regular car or say Toyota Prius as to compare them and use them in the equations. Some of course will be the same, like the air density, but no estimate has been stated or formulated (high altitude density differences).

That's a great idea

Done

How's that?

Greg Locock (talk) 09:36, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In general it looks good. But, there is something weird with Crr1 and Crr2 with the table. Also, is it possible to have some way to a comparison or contrast a normal car with a solar car? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Reddwarf2956 (talkcontribs) 02:29, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crr2 has been eliminated from most people's measurements, it looks as though it was an experimental artefact. So I set it to zero. Yes, I'll addd a prius. Cheers Greg Locock (talk) 09:52, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dated info and cross ref.

[edit]

I am looking for this reference: "Solar Vehicle Performance, Dr. Eric Slimko, December 1, 1991." Where is it? I have not found a book, web page, or anything other than this Wikipedia page.

Also I see that the info with "North American Solar Challenge" is dated. More current info is at the link to the "Main article."

Thanks,

Land Speed Record

[edit]

Is an LSR a race? if not then it belongs elsewhere. I say not, and have included it on the solar vehicles article. The argument that it is interesting is neither here nor there. Greglocock (talk) 00:09, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
