Soccer?[edit]

Since South Africans call soccer soccer, shouldn't the title be the South African national soccer team? Joziboy 27 Feb 2006, 18:54 UTC

The governing body is the South African Football Association, so I think football should remain. Perhaps there should be a divert from South Africa national socccer team. Dancarney 22:22, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Clarification about World Cup record[edit]

The opening paragraph says that they tried to take all white, and all black teams to the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, and were then suspended in 1974. The World Cup record lower down suggests that they were banned from 1966 onwards. Could someone familiar with the situation please clarify it? Thanks. KeithD 11:10, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I was coming here to talk about the same thing. Some research indicates that they were suspended from FIFA in 1962 re-admitted in 1963. Then in 1964 (not 1974) they were suspended again after they announced that they would send a white side to the 66 qualifiers and a black side to the 1970 qualifiers. - See - http://www.news24.com/News24/Sport/SA_2010_bid/0,,2-9-1606_1523624,00.html Jooler 10:17, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Further research indicates that what happened was the the 1964 Conference of FIFA was in Tokyo and that the larger than normal African and Asian contingent overcame European resistance and voted to suspend them. Jooler 12:15, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Bafana bafana?[edit]

Why are they called Bafana Bafana? What does that mean? --Awiseman 21:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

It Means "The Boys"--BeaverOtter28 (talk) 21:13, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes, in what language? Zulu? Xhosa? —Wiki Wikardo 17:07, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I think it's both... but from what I can find it's actually 'abafana'? CodeCat (talk) 02:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Coach[edit]

Somewhen before 1994, Dieter Widmann was Choach of the national football team. (he is now teacher in germany). Don't know, when he was there, i'll add him without date —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.228.24.78 (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2007 (UTC).

New Coach[edit]

Confirmed by both international press and himself, Joel Santana is the new coach. [1] [2] --201.79.218.204 (talk) 20:45, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

'09 Confederations Cup[edit]

I don't know enough about editing Wikipedia to do it myself, but in the section regarding South Africa's Confederations Cup record, the box for the 2009 tournament needs the red border that signifies that the tournament was held on home soil. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.17.2.142 (talk) 00:58, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Kits[edit]

I think they should be reversed. The Away kit for some reason is the home kit and the home kit is the away kit. Can anyone fix this?--BeaverOtter28 (talk) 05:57, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I fixed it (hopefully with no mistakes). See [3] for pictures of the players in the confederations cup 09. Notice that versus Brazil they are dressed in green but versus Spain they are dressed in yellow. If green was their home colour, then they would be dressed in green versus Spain. --SuperJew (talk) 14:12, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I think that the home kit's socks are incorrect, I am quite sure that they were yellow socks. I am not exactly sure how to change the colour to yellow, so can someone else please change it? Thanks Crazydude22 (talk) 09:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

First international[edit]

As the first international match played by the South African football team we have a friendly against the Netherlands in 1924, but the Elo ratings web site lists before that one friendly with Argentina on 9 July 1906 (in Argentina). The South African Union wasn't created until 31 May 1910, but maybe someone can find out if FIFA considers it the first match played by the national team anyway. The current squad is outdated. The new one can be seen here[4]. Can someone please update the the squad? Crazydude22 (talk) 13:15, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Why isn't Steven Pienaar in the squad?74.101.124.213 (talk) 20:49, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

What the heck have people been doing with this section? Brian Baloyi is not in the squad. I will try to fix the squad myself. Crazydude22 (talk) 14:54, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Logo at top of page[edit]

The logo which is shown is the SAFA logo. Would it not be better to replace it with the Bafana Bafana logo, those 2 stars? 41.145.254.58 (talk) 15:03, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I would also like to replace the SAFA logo at the top of the page with the Bafana Bafana logo, as can be seen here:[5]. Crazydude22 (talk) 06:39, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Reverts[edit]

I made a revert to the revision as of a few hours ago because of section removal. I saw that it looked like some content was disputed. If there is anything that needs to be put back, feel free to edit it back in. -- /DeltaQuad|Notify Me\ 21:10, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

World Cup exit[edit]

"Unfortunately, even after defeating France 2-1 in their final game of the Group Stage, they failed to progress to the next round of the tournament, becoming the first host nation not to do so."

"Unfortunately" doesn't give a very objective tone. Even you read it as "unfortunately for them", which most readers won't, it's unnecessary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.181.95.221 (talk) 10:38, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Pre 1992 teams[edit]

Was there a national football time befor 1992 like the Springboks which existed despite the boycott? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.83.125.242 (talk) 11:49, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

There were different FAs, which did sometimes select teams. I know that the 'white' FA had a team in the 1966 WC qualifiers, but it later pulled out. More should be added about these older teams though. Crazydude22 (talk) 15:57, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
