New list of contests section[edit]

I am not sure that the list of contests that has been added to the article is really making the article better. I say this based on WP:NOTLINK and WP:INDISCRIMINATE. Some prose about three or four of these contests, backed up with secondary sources would do better than a list like this. - ¢Spender1983 (talk) 03:22, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point. But, the links are not commercial so discrimination is not really an issue. Also, I thought the readers might be students and teachers mostly. This way, they can see how other schools do it. If the article were about yacht design, then sure. But this is kids' stuff and I just want to make the article a better resource to them. This way they can get a snapshot of the amount of contests on one page, where they are and what kinds of schools. I do respect what you're saying though. I zap lots of external links. But some article are an exception. Can we get a second opinion? Thanks. Cheers. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:40, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I went over WP:INDISCRIMINATE and don't see much that refers to the list in this article. Also, WP:NOTLINK talks about "dwarfing" the article with links, and articles that are "mere repositories" of links. I feel that the list is appropriate on this page would be a welcome sight to the readers. Plus, spaghetti bridges, unlike balsa wood bridges, are mainly constructed for contests, so the list is germane to the article.--Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:48, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see that WP:INDISCRIMINATE has anything to do with discrimination. It has more to do with the definition given here. Think "random," or "unselective." There is no distinction of which contests belong and which don't. There is no consideration for notability of the various contests. The way you have started the list, it could easily expand to include middle school contests and then elementary level too. It is "unselective." Why is one contest in the list and not another?
We shouldn't start nor should we keep lists that don't have a chance of being complete. WP is not a place for people to come along and add a link to their contest (i.e., a collection of links). That is why I brought up WP:NOTLINK.
I am of the opinion that the WP:MOS indicates that prose would be better in this instance. It would improve discussion of the subject, and it would help make sure this article does not get deleted in the future. I like the article because I built a spaghetti bridge in middle school; so I would like to see it stick around. - ¢Spender1983 (talk) 04:53, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good points indeed. Perhaps a compromise: I suggest alpha-sorting the list for fairness, preceded with the qualifying statement: "Contests around the world include:"

I see little chance of a sudden deluge of contests fighting for space on the list and screaming injustice. A list of real estate companies in New York, sure, but not spaghetti bridge contests. (Also, this list includes all contests 10 pages into Google.)

I see no chance of the article being deleted as it is certainly notable. The presence of a debatable section cannot threaten the existence of an article of which it is part.

So, you made a spaghetti bridge, huh? Cool. I am about to make my own. I'm going to use hot glue stick melted into a little metal tin. Is this a good idea? How does one cut spaghetti to correct lengths? Best, --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:31, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
