Page title[edit]

Why is this page titled Sur (poet), whereas Surdas is the WP:COMMONNAME? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 14:54, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an expert on such things, my view is that das was a honorific used in Medieval India meaning slave and by extension devotee. It was attached to the names of Kabir and Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana and were known as Kabirdas and Rahimdas. The same might be true for Sur. His writings are called Sur Sagar (Sur's Ocean) and Sur Saravali, not Surdas Sagar and Surdas Saravali. South Indian Geek (talk) 08:41, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That may well be so. However, we are supposed to use commonly recognized names in page titles. The reliable sources almost universally write his name as "Surdas". -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:05, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am fine with it either way, but sources like one here seem to be juggling between the names Surdas and Sur, but use Surdas as the main title. The article lacks references, even though most of the information seems to be correct. Also, shouldn't the talk page also be moved to Surdas ? @Kautilya3: The article was moved by Anthony Appleyard. The reason by Famous Five (5) was No discussion except for a question on talk page which had one response leaning towards oppose per WP:HONORIFICS.
