Copyright Issues[edit]

Vast swaths of this article were taken verbatem from the Charles Simonyi website. Even the "Personal" section is a complete word for word copy from the Simonyi site. This needs to be rewritten. Rmosler | ● 17:49, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for page protection[edit]

A request was made to protect this page because of persistent vandalism. I checked the edit history for Susan Hutchison. There have been very few edits in the past month and only two recent instances of blatant vandalism [1] [2] -- and both were reverted within one minute. The edits by the another IP are not vandalism but rather constitute a disagreement about content. For example, this edit was a correct attempt to neutralize the language (following WP:NPOV policy) as well as a poor attempt to add information about a dispute (biased and poorly sourced). But these are content disputes and should be discussed on the talk page. I notice there has been no attempt to engage in discussion and would encourage the editors to do so. At the moment, there is no reason for protecting this page -- but I'll keep it watch listed in case there are future problems. (The Wikipedia:Rough guide to semi-protection helps explain when semi-protection might be considered.)

The content dispute itself is a different matter. A quick google news search shows Hutchison's dismissal from KIRO, her subsequent lawsuit and the recent court order about sealed information are significant events -- reported by reliable sources in the large metropolitan newspapers [3], [4]. Yet, her WP bio doesn't mention these events at all. Biographies of living persons should include both criticism and praise when it is significant. I think a couple of sentences about these events, written in a neutral, encyclopedic tone, should be added to this article. — CactusWriter | needles 08:02, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Issues Regarding Self-Editing[edit]

Where would I find guidelines regarding people editing their own Wikipedia pages? The revision history page (entry of 20:42, 19 August 2009) indicates that Susan Hutchison is dictating edits of this page. There is no rule against individuals editing their own WP pages. However, there are guidelines for limiting the kinds of edits. The topic can be found at Wikipedia:Autobiography and WP:COI. Please note that WP is based upon neutrality, therefore it strongly discourages anyone with a conflict-of-interest issue from editing an article. This includes anyone with a relationship, agenda or strong point-of-view -- either for or against an individual. Removing peacock language[edit]

The introductory text of an article should be a concise summary of the subject. Additions such as this are unnecessary. The organization's wikilink leads to more information for anyone interested, and the body of the text already adequately expands on the topic. More problematically, it is a transparent form of promotion and hype -- that is, an attempt to falsely inflate the notability of a subject. This also applies to the false term "well-known". This is Peacock language. Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia and the vast majority of readers have never heard of Hutchison, let alone consider her "well-known". By every notability standard, she is a local personality. The most that can be said is: She is best known locally as a former news anchor for KIRO-TV in Seattle. — CactusWriter | needles 08:22, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lede Text[edit]

There have been numerous recent attempts to change the lede paragraph into non-standard form without discussion or reasons provided. Policies for the Lede Paragraph can be found at WP:LEDE. The introductory text should be a brief summary of the subject -- minor details, such as a few month membership on an election task force, can be added into the article body. Bolded text is limited to the Subject title (in this case, Susan Hutchison) and nothing else per guidelines at MOS:BOLD. Because the name Charles Simonyi is obscure and unknown to most WP readers, the link to his Wikipedia is appropriate per WP:LINK as it furthers the reader's understanding. Finally, a term like Emmy-winning when used in the lede is discouraged as peacock language -- especially in a case where like this where it falsely implies a greater award (Emmy Award) than what it actually is (Emmy Award#Regional Emmys). — CactusWriter | needles 12:40, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There continues to be some edit warring on this article. Here are a few of the issues:
  • Journalist or News Anchor. I have yet to see any independent references which call Hutchison a journalist, the vast majority use the term "news anchor". This includes this November 2009 analysis witten by an emeritus professor of journalism specifically making the distinction that Hutchison was an anchor and not a reporter.
  • Philanthropist? There are no references for this. She is employed by charitable organizations and is a board member of charitable orgs.. Hutchison works for a philanthropist -- Charles Simonyi, who created the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. Until independent reliable sources use that term, we can't use it.
  • Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences. This is the official title -- not Charles Simonyi Foundation. Additionally, the term is linked to the philanthropy section of the Charles Simonyi page (per MOS:LINK) because it helps readers learn more about an obscure subject. I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't be linked.
  • Discovery Institute. Multiple references state that Hutchison was an active board member of the Discovery Institute for several years until 2008. This includes these comments by the DI's president. There is no reason why this position should not be included in the Charity work section along with her other board positions.
If there are any RS references which show something contrary to the information in this article, please present them. Any problems should be discussed here before deleting sourced text. Thanks. — CactusWriter | needles 10:41, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
