The template file format described in this article relates to desktop applications.

For example, consider word processing or desktop publishing, or image processing software like photoshop, or spreadsheets or other applications with a "Save As ..." menu and a "New file ..." menu.

Someone keeps putting web-development-specific links on every page that has the word "template" in the title! Please stop doing this.
