Comment by Winternf[edit]

There are a couple of corrections/additions to note in biography on Tex Winter.

Tex was coach of Marquette from 1951-1953. After he retired as head coach at Long Beach State in 1983, Tex served as consultant to Dale Brown at LSU from 1983-1985. In 1985 Tex was hired as an assistant coach by the Jerry Krause, General Manager for the Chicago Bulls. Tex remained on the Bulls staff until 1999. Coach Winter helped win three NBA Championship Rings with the Lakers in years 2000, 2001, and 2002. As of 2006, at the age of 84, Tex Winter is currently a consultant to Laker's Coach Phil Jackson. Coach Winter remains the most respected of the NBA's assistant coaches. His vitality, acuity and integrity are reknowned. His contributions to the game overall have been significant. He, along with his Kansan friend Ken Mahoney, invented some devices that helped teach or refine the game. These include the toss back, the snap-back rims that permitted the “dunk,” and the short skirt backboard. His book on the Triangle Offense is in its third printing and has been published in several foreign languages. It is considered one of the best books on the strategy of the game. Coaches on all levels have attended his seminars and viewed his videos, and come to him for advice and mentoring. His influence on the game and its future has been immeasurable. Hardly a career assistant.

Tex Winter's accomplishments may not be as easily quantified as Red Auerbach's or John Wooden's, but he made his mark as a head coach long before he taught basketball geometry to Phil Jackson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O'Neil and Kobe Bryant as an assistant.

2009-10 Lakers[edit]

  • Winter was a "consultant" on that team, not a coach. He is not listed on the championship template, so it should not be included on his page. If Winter did get a championship ring for that season (09-10), please add a reference for this fact before reverting that info -- I was unable to confirm it myself. Thanks. -Kgwo1972 (talk) 17:48, 18 June 2010 (UTC)
    • Tex Winter was awarded the 2008-2009 Championship Ring in a Special Ceremony on October 27, 2009 and was Announced as a Assistant Coach not a Consultant. PeterAKer (talk) 09:05, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
      • What is your source for that? This article says Winter has NOT been an assistant coach since 2008.[1] Thanks. -Kgwo1972 (talk) 23:56, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
