TWN/ROC and TPE's flag issue[edit]

dear all the wikipedia users who usually visit this page. i hereby want to inform everyone no matter you from PRC, TWN/ROC or any other countries. please respect the TWN/ROC's title and flag. although TWN/ROC uses term CHINESE TAIPEI to participate most international games, this page clearly indicates the host country not member country. thus, there is no problem when i indicate the host nation is Taiwan(Republic of China) based on the WIKIPEDIA policy. other translation of this page all indicate that 2009's world game host country is TAIWAN rather than CHINESE TAIPEI, for the latter name is just a member, not a country. therefore, please do not ruin the page by removing the title and flag of TWN/ROC. on the other side, some people or citizens of TWN/ROC may favor either TAIWAN or ROC. thereby, being compromised, i would add these two names together as Taiwan(Republic of China). i hereby strongly warn the people from TWN/ROC, please do not start the title battle of Taiwan and ROC. respect each other. for other foreigners, some of you may believe the official term for TWN/ROC must be CHINESE TAIPEI, so i would concede to add TPE's flag to interpret it is a team name of TWN/ROC. some others question why ROC's flag is added, and i would ask why some of you change the host country to hosts to avoid using ROC's flag. it is obviously you guy try to start the political matter, not me. from the beginning to now, i'm always compromised to indicate the TWN/ROC under the team name of TPE. thanks台灣護士 (talk) 17:12, 10 April 2009 (UTC) if you go to visit the 2009 world game website, it clearly introduces that kaohsiung is a larger city of taiwan in the english page for host city introduction. thus, the information can be based on that official website.台灣護士 (talk) 17:17, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Early World games sports[edit]

  • Does anyone have any information on the early World Games? Specifically I want to know what sports were competed then, so the correct info can be put up on the page. Perakhantu 17:49, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, this is an old question. Anyway, if someone still wants to compile the results of events, sports123.com has the results of all the competitions, arrainged by sport. It would take some work, but the information is available. Gentgeen 09:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Flag for 2009 Kaohsiung games[edit]

The 2009 games are going to Taiwan, but I don't think the ROC flag will be used officially anywhere. I'm reverting to use the TPE flag, just like in countless Olympic-related pages. Any other ideas please explain. HkCaGu (talk) 20:17, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

we understand your explanation that TWN or ROC's flag will bot be used anyway during this contest. however, we just try to tell hte truth and explain why chinese taipei must be reverted to taiwan roc. also, chinese taipei is just an alternative title for taiwan ROC during the game which doesn't mean that chinese taipei is a country or a territory. thus, i herein change it's flag to taiwan ROC. otherwise, foreigners may be confused what is chinese taipei, or is taipei is country or a city in PRC. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 台灣護士 (talkcontribs) 22:03, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We are not here to serve the last confused reader by providing all necessary information on every mention of Taiwan. Mentions about teams and athletes have always been (since 1980) labeled with the TPE flag. But I recognize this time the games themselves being in Taiwan is different. I have to conclude that the only NPOV solution is to not have a flag. More is found at: Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(Chinese)#Republic_of_China.2C_Taiwan.2C_and_variations_thereof HkCaGu (talk) 03:27, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is an IOC-sanctioned sporting event, I think we need to have the Chinese Taipei Olympic Flag along with Chinese Taipei as the name of the country. It is unfortunate that the ROC flag has been removed, but not having a flag is unacceptable (as is calling the country Taiwan). The alliance (talk) 05:17, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the Chinese Taipei flag should be used as this is the name that ROC competes under in international competitions. We should not write our articles to explain the differences between Taiwan/ROC/Taipei in every single instance that they occur. If a reader is too lazy to click on the link for an explanation then that is entirely their own ignorance. If it's causing too many problems then perhaps remove it and wait to see which flag is used at the competition itself. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 14:39, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

TPE and ROC flag dispute[edit]

dear all the wikipedia users who are interested in this page: i understand all your opinion about the reality that taiwan/ROC use the title under the CHINESE TAIPEI to host the world game. and for my own opinion, i would be compromised to post both of the flag of TPE and ROC/TWN. i did this, for i mean to note. please, do not think i try to ruin this page or argue with you guys about the politics. maybe you guys thinks it's unnecessary to note that chinese taipei is taiwan. however, i do think is important. therefore, i would refer chinese taipei and its flag to the host country, but adding ROC/TWN's flag and title afterward to refer its to de facto host country. i hope you guys can accept my concession about this ambiguous issue. thanks 台灣護士 (talk) 18:03, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To continue this: Why must the ROC flag be added? If ROC has chosen to run under the banner of Chinese Taipei then why can't we leave it at that? It is unambiguous. The Chinese Taipei article explains everything anyway. I believe that adding a Taiwan/ROC banner actually makes this a political issue; more than it should be. ROC/TWN uses the Taipei flag to avoid political conflict spilling over into other parts of life – why can't we do the same here? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 16:57, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have changed the field name to "Hosts" to try to avoid the ROC situation – this way, Taipei can be listed as the "Hosts" without the problem of them being listed as a "country". Does this help? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 17:04, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Very good move to retitle. Now if it says "host", then shouldn't it be TPE? Maybe we can actually put "Taiwan" and ROC flag in parentheses AFTER the official "Chinese Taipei" and the TPE flag. (ROC government may have endorsed it, but it's the TPE NOC that officially bid for the games.) HkCaGu (talk) 17:15, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have a source saying that the Games bid was done under the name Chinese Taipei? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 17:35, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First, I think that changing the "Country" to "Host" is a good edit for NPOV. Second, the ROC did not choose Chinese Taipei, but settled under the name due to pressure from the PRC. I think for international events sponsored by the IOC, Chinese Taipei ought to be used, because the link to the TPE article explains the whole ROC/TWN/TPE situation. The alliance (talk) 23:33, 10 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw that utterly long entry for Kaohsiung's entry under the host column, and I find it a rather extreme solution to a simple "problem". So instead of having a column for "Location" and a column for "Country (now called "Hosts"), both of which actually means the other, we could simply collapse them into one column, so that the first entry reads "Santa Clara, California, United States", while that for TPE can read "Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Republic of China". Problem solved.--Huaiwei (talk) 14:30, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Huaiwei makes a good point. However, I think it is important to have the host and location separately. Maybe working off your suggestion, we can change some of the entries to "Santa Clara, California", "London, England", and "Kaohsiung, Taiwan" and then change the host for the most recent Games to Chinese Taipei instead of the long entry that currently exists. The alliance (talk) 18:10, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No new facilities?[edit]

I'm confused by the "no new facilities" policy listed as a requirement. Why is this a requirement? And I was in Kaohsiung last summer, they are definitely building all kinds of new facilities for the World Games. The whole city is getting an Olympic-like makeover, including a new metro system and stadiums. Here is a recent article about the cool new stadium they built: http://www.archicentral.com/construction-is-finished-for-toyo-itos-solar-powered-stadium-18207/ -Jaardon (talk) 05:44, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More Generic Info needed[edit]

It's a bit short. How much does the host country make? How much are the tickets ? Are Olympic contestants allowed to compete? Why can't they be run at the same time of the Olympics ? Just before or just after ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.34.154.24 (talk) 21:56, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trampolining[edit]

Shouldn't trampoline be deleted as a current World Games sport since it was accepted into the Olympic Games years ago? 2600:1004:B152:7609:A592:C778:907C:634 (talk) 21:55, 28 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Racquetball[edit]

I added racquetball to the list of World Games sports, as it is on their official program [a], although won't be on the program for 2017. Trb333 (talk) 14:27, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lemma[edit]

The official name of the event has changed to The Word Games (TWG) [1]. Shouldn't the article be moved to The World Games? --Hyperdieter (talk) 18:08, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:THE, definite articles can cause problems with the length of the name, the quick search function, and sorting. Due to these problems, the default rule is to exclude them unless certain specific conditions are met.
Per WP:COMMONNAME, in Wikipedia, an article title is a natural language word or expression that indicates the subject of the article: as such the article title is usually the name of the person, or of the place, or of whatever else the topic of the article is. ... Wikipedia generally prefers the name that is most commonly used (as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources) as such names will usually best fit the criteria listed above. When there is no single, obvious name that is demonstrably the most frequently used for the topic by these sources, editors should reach a consensus as to which title is best by considering these criteria directly. Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources. This includes usage in the sources used as references for the article.
Per WP:TITLE, article titles are based on how reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject. There is often more than one appropriate title for an article. In that case, editors choose the best title by consensus based on the considerations that this page explains.
There must be consensus. The recent move was done in violation without consensus.

World Games - Yugoslavia (SFRY) vs. FRY[edit]

hey what´s up...

I find it a bit confusing, maybe we can clear it up.

So according to the website of the world games Yugoslavia won a medal only in 2001. Thus in that time it was no longer the Socialist FRY but already the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia which it was from (1992–2003). And it's a name which was never accepted by the UN and so on, a bit of a polemic name, but which the World Games seems to accept. Does that sum it up well? --Kiyarrlls-talk 20:38, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's about right. According to the article FRY, the United Nations finally admitted FRY in 2000 after it gave up its aspiration to be the sole legal successor to SFRY. So by 2001 it was accepted as FRY in sports competitions. Serbia and Montenegro continued to be represented as one team in international sports until a few months after they separated in June, 2006.
