|I have been doing research on the English Cornwallis Family of this period.
Some references imply that this Thomas was the grandson of Ambassador Sir Charles Cornwallis, and son of Sir Charles' eldest son William, while others imply he was probably the son of Ambassador Sir Charles. This particular lineage has not been the focus of my own research (into descendants of the 3rd marriage of Ambassador Sir Charles to Dorothy, daughter of Richard Vaughan, Bishop of London and widow of John Jeggon, Bishop of Norwich), so I do not feel I can offer a definitive conclusion. However, I offer to any who wish to do further research on this Maryland-affilited Thomas Cornwallis, the following references which may be of help:
The Genealogy of the Cornwallis Family by Lady Jane Cornwallis: Pedigree of Cornwallis. From the Records of the College of Arms, Wills, Registers, and other authorities. The Private Correspondence of Jane Lady Cornwallis; 1613-1644. Frome the Originals in the Possession of the Family; pp. xxxii- London; Printed and Sold by S. & J. Bentley, Wilson, & Fley, Bangor House, Shoe Lane. 1842. UCLA library, DA 378 B1A3 1842. Text, page vii, includes the following recognition: "The Editor is exremely indebted to the kindness of his friends J. Gae Rokewode, Esq. and C. G. Young, Esq. York Herald, for the pedigrees of the Cornwallis and Meutys families, inserted at the end of the Memoirs, which, by their diligence and research, have been rendered much more complete and correct than any before existing in a manuscript or printed form.... The Editor further feels bound to offer his best thanks to the different Clergymen to whom he has had occasion to refer for extracts from their parochial Registers; and it is gratifying to him to be enabled to add, that in every instance he received the most obliging answers, and in some cases much useful information. Audley End, June 30, 1842." [Note that the original pedigree was supposedly created during the lifetime of Lady Jane Cornwallis, and that I have noted probable errors in the descendency from Ambassador Sir Charles Cornwallis regarding his son Charles from his 3rd marriage (and who married Edith Neuce), who was incorrectly shown as his grandson via Ambassador Charles' son William.] [Note also that this source may prove helpful for those researching the lineage of the Cornwallis who was defeated at Yorktown.]
Whitt, P. B., New Light on Sir William Cornwallis, The Essayist, The Review of English Studies, Vol. 8, No. 30 (Apr 1932), pp 155-169. [Contains an excellent and unique discussion of the family and life of Ambassador Sir Charles Cornwallis, as well as the life of his son William Cornwallis, the Essayist.]
Finally, The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has articles on Sir Thomas Cornwallis (father of Ambassador Sir Charles Cornwallis d.1604), Ambassador Sir Charles Cornwallis, and Sir William Cornwallis, the essayist (son of Ambassador Sir Charles). Unfortunately, it does not mention the children of the Ambassador's 2nd and 3rd marriages, nor does it reflect their relationship to this Thomas Cornwallis of Maryland.
Regards to fellow Cornwallis researchers - hope these prove helpful,Peggy Knutson Wishon 220.127.116.11 (talk) 16:44, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
