"On the election of Washburn to the United States Senate in early 1874" - was Washburn elected or was he selected? I'm pretty sure at this point, US Senators were chosen by the state legislatures - so it needs to be made clear that Washburn wasn't chosen by the people - he was selected some other way. From looking at Massachusetts State Police, it appears that the police had only been established in 1865 - do any sources give any reason for wanting the police force disbanded?
