The processing of straw was also an omportant part of West of Ireland culture, as well as something of a community activity. A song exists in Connemara and other Gaeltacht areas called Casadh an tSúgán(The Twisting of The Rope). An unwanted suitor arrives at the home of his admiree and is put to twiting the straw into a rope. He keeps going backwards as the rope grows longer, until he is outside the door of the house; thereupon the door is smartly shut in his face. Douglas Hyde (Dúglas de hÍde, An Craoibhin Aobhinn) wrote a short play of that name (in Irish) for what was to become The Abbey Theatre.--PeadarMaguidhir 10:21, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
