Comparison with other data and models

I intend to overhaul this section which remains a bit of a mess. I'll create another section for other analyses of the same data. I'm going to remove uncited bits, if anyone thinks I've pruned it back to much please let me know...--IanOfNorwich (talk) 11:28, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

I have made some changes to make this article a bit less opinionated and put the sum of all the adjustments in context with the total trend: 0.069 in 1.7 K/dec. These are not "major" or "significant". The main reason for better agreement is the longer time period and the larger trend climate has shown in that period.

It is untruthful to make out there were huge problems with UHA and it only agrees now because of "loads" of correction they have had to make.

This article is not the place to go into so I avoided adding it here but there are much larger issues and corrections made to surface temps. Eg look at 0.5C war-time jumps on SST.

Please try to maintain NPOV.

Prabhakara et al

I've taken this out for now:

Doubts had been raised as early as 2000 about the UAH analysis by the work of Prabhakara et al., which minimised errors due to satellite drift. They found a trend of 0.13 °C/decade, in reasonable agreement with surface trends.

I'd like to put it into an other analyses section but the abstract states that it is an analysis of "vertically‐weighted global‐mean temperature of the atmosphere, with a peak weight near the mid troposphere" -which seems to suggest TMT rather than TLT, but the trend seems too high for TMT and the anstract suggests "deduced from conventional meteorological data that have been corrected for urbanization effects agrees reasonably with this satellite‐deduced result." and it seems a bit odd to draw such a comparison between ground and TMT rather than TLT. This might be worth keeping somewhere else although it is not currently well sourced:

The record comes from a succession of different satellites and problems with inter-calibration between the satellites are important, especially NOAA-9, which accounts for most of the difference between the RSS and UAH analyses.

Graph?

It would be great to display a graph or graphs of the satellite temperature data collected over time on this page. --В²C ☎ 17:19, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

"currently"

"The lower troposphere trend derived from UAH satellites (+0.128 °C/decade) is currently lower ...". When is "currently", no source is given? In 2017 the trend is much higher. The article seems to be years out of date. It should be nominated for speedy deletion. Keith McClary (talk) 04:37, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

I went through and deleted most of the archived links of dead pages from the external links: I kept one that seemed like a basic reference, I moved one to an in-line citation, and I deleted the rest, which were twenty year out of date. Skepticalgiraffe (talk) 22:10, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Citation for Trend Correction of version 6.0 data set

The -0.026 Trend Correction value for version 6.0 comes from this quote in the announcement on Roy Spencer's version 6.0 blog post (cite_note-Version6.0beta-13 on the page) "The two most significant changes from an end-user perspective are (1) a decrease in the global-average lower tropospheric (LT) temperature trend from +0.140 C/decade to +0.114 C/decade ... The 0.026 C/decade reduction in the global LT trend is due to lesser sensitivity of the new LT to land surface skin temperature (est. 0.010 C/decade), with the remainder of the reduction (0.016 C/decade) due to the new diurnal drift adjustment, the more robust method of LT calculation, and other changes in processing procedures." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.120.15.154 (talk) 04:56, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Merge?

I've been trying to reconcile this article, the MSU temperature measurements article, and the Satellite temperature measurements article, all of which cover nearly the same material (and all of which seem a bit out of date, although I'm not sure I'm current enough to do a rigorous updating.) My original thinking was that the text of this article should be merged into the MSU temperature measurements article, and this article changed to a redirect.Skepticalgiraffe (talk) 21:46, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

-My thinking on the subject right now is to keep this article, but remove the parts that duplicate the MSU temperature measurements article. Specifically, I deleted almost all of the "Comparison with other data and models" section from this article, and make it a link to the MSU article, and also to removed the "Corrections to UAH data trends" from the MSU article, and made that a link to the section here. The result is that the material is here only once, rather than duplicated in both articles (which, if nothing else, means that we can update only one article when updates are needed).
