Trousers[edit]

During the 19th century, sophomores and freshmen would battle each other in an annual ritual over whether the freshmen were allowed to wear trousers.

I would guess shorts or some sort of traditional clothing would be options. But, and the source is unclear since it is rather old, I believe the trousers referred to a more formal type of "pants" and that the meanings have evolved over the last 125 years. 1878 dictionary definition.
